Hi All. I'm a long-time lurker and decided to sign up and post a question. I currently have a Ram 1500 crew cab. It's great for the kids in the back as there is enormous space even with their car seats. However, I'm growing tired of a full size truck due to the size, parking it, etc. I don't use the bed very often which is what brought me to look at the Passport. I LOVE IT. I love how it looks, drives, and the back seat room is plenty for two kids in car seats. However, my only concern is what to do when I need to fill up my portable gas and diesel cans. I probably do this 4 to 5 times a year for all of my toys. Having a pickup bed works great. Putting the cans in the back of an SUV is the only thing holding me back.

What/How do you guys do it? I'm not interested in putting the cans on a hitch rack due to the dangers with that. Does anyone use some sort of large tote, etc. to put the gas cans in to eliminate or minimize the fumes?

You can put gas cans in the back of the Passport and there shouldn't be any problem on short trips as long as the can's cover is tight and it's not leaking. The back of the Passport has recessed cargo bins that can hold two mid size gas cans upright if you lift up the cargo liner, but Honda also offers a cargo net and cargo organizer accessories that can help keep things upright.

To help with air quality inside the car, just switch off recirculation from the A/C controls or roll down the windows during the trip.

Are you already running a trailer when you are needing that fuel? If not, one of this type of thing works nice for transporting 'things' outside of the back (Various types, models and materials, even ones that 'fold up' (or a Yakima version that will cost you your first child but is secretly a Transformer :) ) :

Amazon.com: MaxxHaul 70107 53" x 19-1/2" Hitch Cargo Carrier - Trailer Mount Steel With High Side Rails For RV's, Trucks, SUV's, Vans, Cars 2" Receiver 500-lb Load Capacity , Black : Everything Else

If you are using a trailer for toys, no room to put the cans on the trailer? If it is a 'thin rail' only unit, a storage platform for fuel up near the neck could (possibly) be added.

Just some ideas.

I have (3) 2 1/2 gal. and (1) 3 gal. plastic gas cans that I fill when needed. I set them centered & side by side in the cargo area of the Passport and use a 3' long bungee cord to hold them in place. I start @ one of the rear side tie downs & then go through each can handle (wrapping each handle once) and ending @ the opposite rear side tie down. The bungee cord holds them in place without any movement.

I have a pair of 5 gal metal gas cans - when required I place them in the rear and go. They sit steady on this intown run.
However my pair of 20 gal. propane tanks need to be steadied, I use a bungee cord (secured on each latch in the floorboard).

I don't carry any passengers, just in case.
