We Have a similar issue, hard shift from 4th to 5th gear, approximately 35 mph. Took the car in and Honda said they couldn’t replicate the hard shift and everything checked out ok but noted on the account of the problem. Started around 5k miles and now have 15k and still doing it. Taking it back in again as it has not resolved itself.

I noticed my EX-L would do the same. I'd feel and hear that "kick" with that next higher gear engaging. Not sure yet on which gear exactly. But it's on the 2nd-3rd or 3rd-4th or the 4th to 5th gear switching. Also, It only happens on that specific gear, the other gears are ok.
This usually happens on those hotter days or when I drive in an unusual way, the non conservative way. I am guessing it is a thermal issue because I don't get this problem when driving on a cooler day or just cruising around on a cooler day.

 

Maybe theres software out to remedy this? Did the dealer check?

 

It took weeks before my dealership finally called someone and was told there was a bulletin about the transmission module. It just got done so hopefully this fixes it

I get a single small clunk right around 30 but not every time, maybe 60% of the time. I'll check out the TSB.

 

What year and trim level do you have?

 

It's probably the dog clutch. I have the same symptom, which based on all the forum that I have read, it's "normal".

 

My wife has a 2019 Odyssey (22.5K miles) and it has alway had a really rough shift right around 24 MPH. If you are too soft on the gas or let your foot off to slow down around 24 (like when driving through a neighborhood) it gets really jerky.

When I test drove the Passport I wasn't able to replicate it, but now that I'm driving it for real (and going through neighborhoods) I feel it as well.

We've decided you either have to let off the gas closer to 20 or push past 24 before letting off the pedal. We both find it pretty annoying.

 

Somewhat off subject, but somewhat related. Today my car was acting strange, using the above term of JERKY (or surging).

While using the cruise control (at 30 MPH) it was trying to throttle up then back off; just enough for me to sense it but not enough to be noticeable on the tach.
A few min later I was in a faster zone (45) where it continued - then I noticed the culprit:

It was in the Sequential mode (a first time for me). Punching the button returned it to D and the problem went away.

 

Got the TCM reflash done this morning by the dealer. Hopefully the issue is fixed!

 

What TCM reflash? I assume that is some kind of software update for the TCM module? More info? Though my rough shifting isn't as bad as others I've heard about.

 

They just updated the TCM to the latest software I guess. They actually didn't even test the car before performing the work. I printed out the TSB that was mentioned in this thread and showed them. We haven't driven the car much, but we haven't noticed the issue again yet.

 

My dealer doesn't even have that TSB; says TSB #20-029 is for my PP according to the VIN

They called me back later after test drive and experienced the hard upshift but told me it was under tsb#20-029. They performed the update and the PP feels smoother right away.

Had the transmission software updated on my PP today with TSB 20-029. If you have a 2019 and experiencing hard shifts, contact your Honda service advisor and discuss the problem as well as TSB 20-029. The $100 diagnostic charge was waived since the TSB was applicable and covered under warranty.

 

My 2020 PP elite with 300 miles shows transmission shifting up down while at constant low speed in range of 30mph.
This is just a soft but annoying shifting. It looks as if the dynamic range for the gears not properly overlapped. Any comments from the experts?

 

Go to your dealer and see if your PP can get the tsb#20-029...it is an update for the tcm and made my transmission shift super smooth

 

I got an appointment and will report back on the outcome.

 

Based on dealer service tech findings, the problem was caused by 1/2 quart overfill of the transmission. No code update was outstanding for the TCU. On the short drive home I notices no transmission searching for gear in the slow speed range. (This overfill issue looks like a screw-up in the line and appears to be not uncommon since the service advisor pointed to this option right away after hearing the description of my observations)

 

2019 PP scheduled for the TSB 20-029 update next Thursday; also asked to have the crackling sound from the speakers addressed and was told that may require a replacement of the entire engine harness...all under warranty so, no worries.

 

Had same issues a month after purchase. Got a brand new transmission installed under warranty. Some kind of defect and something metal broke off inside they said.

 

What symptom are you referring to?

 

Got a brand new 2020 Passport, and have a similar issue. I don't have the "random searching" issue, but do get an issue between 25mph-35mph where the transmission will do a "clunk". I see that when driving slowly. When accelerating fast, I never feel it. I see some discussions about this being normal on Ridgeline/Pilot with the dog clutch. Talked to the dealer, and said "don't worry the transmission is under warranty". Car has 200 miles on it...

 

I would look for a different dealer.

 

We haven't experienced this shifting issue since taking it to the dealer. So hopefully you all will have the same luck.

This this the same as the thud I hear and feel at about 23- 25 MPH? I had my 2020 EXL PP in the dealership yesterday and they told me they couldn't reproduce it the issue. But they did (I hope fix the cracking Info system)

 

What you all may be experiencing is the engagement of the dog clutch. It engages at the 4-5 shift and disengages at the 7-8 shift. It should not be that noticeable though. I have approx 11,000 miles on my Touring and I have never noticed anything like this on the 4-5 shift under any driving conditions. I do, however, hear and feel a very slight "shudder" on the 7-8 shift which is easily replicated. This issue, as has been explained by Honda, is due to having the OEM transmission cooler installed. It is described as a "normal operation".
you might try taking off in S mode and using the paddle shifters to see if you can replicate the noise at the 4-5 shift.

Same problem experienced today. 2020 PP Elite, 9950 miles on it. But also experience random electrical issues (clock displays 8pm Oct 29, 2015 more often than not, ambient lights not activating when headlights are on, reverse lights not turning on in reverse, display says to press brake to put the car in park. I look straight down at my foot on the brake). I took it to the dealership to hear there was a recall for some electrical component that was switched it. Two weeks later, I got the recall notice in the mail. Still experiencing issues and more. Any advice?

 

My car does it when shifting from 3rd into 2nd. It's more pronounced going downhill when slowing down. I think my situation is attributed to the design on the 9 speed tranny. Gears 1 and 2 are shifting differently than the rest.
