Wireless Apple CarPlay?

35017 Views 49 Replies 31 Participants Last post by  AnselmWilson
Most cars with Apple CarPlay require you to actually plug in the phone for it to work, since the phone battery would otherwise be drained (at least that's one argumet I've heard). Given that the Elite has the wireless phone charger, does anyone know if wireless CarPlay is supported? Or is CarPlay supported via USB only (which would significantly limit the usefulness of wireless charging)?

As far as I know the only cars with wireless Carplay are BMWs and some of the newest Audi models.

This video specifically says no wireless Carplay/Android Auto. It is a shame that it isn't a more common feature yet, it makes the wireless charger much less useful.

Thanks!! Not the answer I was hoping for, but thanks for the insight.
The one I test drove today had wireless Apple car play. It was Elite trim. My understanding is the sport does not have it but the rest of the trim levels do. The Elite audio quality is excellent .

It has wireless charging and you can do audio over bluetooth using the car's interface, but I didn't think you can actually use Apple Carplay where you get the iPhone icons and apps on the car's touchscreen without plugging in.

Pretty sure it does. It also had a social network so back seat passengers can send their play list to the unit. i watched the video posted the guy wasn't clear to me.

I might be wrong
I remember the days when this stuff used to be extra.
My bet is if it wasn't for rival brands making it standard, Honda would have us paying a premium.
My iPhone battery sucks, I would prefer to plug it in...
Apple play question. Took ford along time to enable google maps and waze within Apple play. Can anyone tell me if it works in the passport?

I don't think this was a function of Ford; it is dependent on Apple (included in later iOS versions) and the app developer. Both Waze and Google Maps are supported by CarPlay. See the section here entitled "Choose your favorite navigation app."

So these apps should be available on the Passport. I don't have mine yet, so someone with the Passport and using CarPlay can confirm.

Waze and Google Maps both work in my CR-V so they should also work in the Passport. Carplay is basically the same in all cars since the phone is doing all the work and the car is just showing it on screen.

Picked up a 2019 Passport Elite 2 nights ago. Carplay is only supported via USB (see screenshot).

BMW has wireless carplay, but it is not exactly as it sounds. Your phones goes through BMW servers and back to the car. My friend has a newer BMW and his carplay would not work the other day. He was told that BMW servers were down at the moment. They also charge nearly $200 a year to be able to use your Apple Play.
I have an iPhone and plan to use ApplePlay, and since the phone has to be connected via USB (which should also charge the phone) then I don't see a real value to having the Charging Pad or am I missing something?
No, you are not. It's the wireless carplay that would be nice. If that were available, then the wireless charging would be great.

I agree that there is little value, for the most part. There is some value if all you want to do is charge the phone (albeit at a slower rate than using a USB connection), so just set the phone on the charger and off you go.
I just used my wireless charger today. I kinda like it.
