I bought Yakima crossbars and they whistled like crazy. I’m not a huge fan of the wind deflector look, so I got creative. I saw a lot of fixes online, including wrapping a cord around the crossbars to mix up the wind.
My fix:
- the issue for me turned out to be the channel that runs along the bottom of the crossbars themselves. Those channels are used to mount the crossbars to the stadium (right word?) that connects to the roof rails (front to back bars)
- I just got normal packing tape, the clear stuff, and taped the bottom of the crossbars, over that channel, and the problem immediately went away. (Side note, my crossbars were previously used and that rubber strip that normally sits in the channel and fixes the whistle was missing)
Like others have said, it’s possible there are other causes for the noise, including position of the crossbars. I diagnosed my issue by having a friend stick his head out the sunroof while we drove on a back road, then he put his hand in different places to see what made the whistling go away.
Side note: these have done really in the rain and sand, but there’s a chance you have to replace them. Haven’t gone through a winter yet, we’ll see how that goes.
Best of luck, it’s an annoying problem 👍
