I have 39k miles on my 2019 Honda passport elite and the dealer is recommending I get an engine clean and decarb and have the transmission fluids changed. Is this necessary? Going on a trip this weekend and want to make sure it won’t be a problem. I was planning to get it done during my next oil change. I am at 40% rn.

Decarb and engine clean are not Honda recommended services. Do you tow? Does the maintenance minder code come up for a transmission fluid change? What are they charging for the transmission fluid change? I've been told the transfer case fluid and trans fluid are supposed to be changed at the same time.

Before your departure, check your oil level, windshield fluid level, and the air pressure in your tires (including the spare).
Engine clean and decarb...how is that done, with a water hose to clean/hose off the engine and a bottle of fuel additive poured into the gas tank?

I review only what the maintenance minder shows. If the dealer recommends anything else I don't do it. This coming from my previous 2014 Accord EX-L where I was quoted $9k for timing belt, wheel alignment and all four brakes done. All were on the maintenance minder but I chose to have a close friend do it for 1/4 that price.

$9k?! That goes beyond stealership into mega scam territory. That's way more than just getting an engine replaced o_O

and I never went back Same dealer has the drive thru wheel alignment cameras and every damn time I went for oil changes they kept saying I needed an alignment. They lost a customer
My local Honda dealership also tries to charge excessive prices for parts and service and tries to convince me to do unneccssary service. I do all the schedule service items myself, so I know when they are trying to rip me off. Their prices are bad enough, but they often pressure me to have service performed with no clue as to when or at what mileage it has been done previously or whether it is really necessary. New engine air filters, pollen filters, brake pads, brake fluid, and coolant are always recommeded enven though they haven't performed any test/inspeciton.

FWIW, I take my Hondas to Firestone for tire mounting, balancing, four wheel alignment. They offered a lifetime (of the car) alignment for a little less than the price of two alignment events. I take the cars in for alignment every 5-6K after I do my own tire rotation. So far, it has been service with a smile.

Transmission fluid yes, 3 years is the sweet spot. usually 50k miles or 3 years.

Forget the engine clean garbage

The 9 speed transmission usually sees the MM set the code for a fluid drain and fill around 60000 miles, along with the front transfer case fluid. The 3.1 Honda transmission fluid can be purchased for around $28.00 or so on line from some dealers or your dealer may match that price. It takes between 3.5 and 3.75 quarts for a drain and fill, no filter to change or clean.

The transfer case takes Honda Hypoid Gear Oil HGO-1 GL-5 SAE 75W85, about 3/4 of a quart. I think it is around $16.00 or so on line plus shipping in most cases.

Like others have said... You best course of action regarding your vehicle maintenance is to follow the manufacturers schedule which will alert you on the Maintenance Minder. You can also look up the various service codes and such in the owners' manual. Unfortunately, you can expect that the dealer (whose prices are often insanely high) to "recommend" more than what the manufacturer's maint intervals call for.

I remember back when I had my first Honda (A '92 Accord LX sedan)... my local dealer would always recommend items that were on the severe maintenance schedule. Clearly, the dealers are looking to add on work for any customer that comes through.

If you're up-to-date on everything and nothing showing as due on the MM... I'd say you're ready to hit the road and I hope you all have a great trip.

Once upon a time ago, you could pour water into the carburetor, of a running motor (as you kept the idle up) and carbon would be cleaned off of your piston tops.
Today, service departments will attach an "iV" to your fuel line and run a chemical (BG 44k) into your fuel system, YouTube Video
The problem is...if you don't specify this procedure and actually watch them perform it, they will pour the chemical into your gas tank and it is not nearly as effective.
The equipment is fragile and techs/mechanics bang their tools around so much that the equipment becomes damaged and won't pressure up correctly, so watch the video then watch the mechanic do the work, to get what you're paying for.

We always just floored it out on the highway once in a while to "clean the carbon out"
Not sure if it worked but it was "required maintenance"
😜
