Hey gang. I've sifted through a lot of messages regarding hitches. I am considering a uhaul hitch for my 1UP bike rack. Uhaul has the rack and can install for around $220. It's about $500 less than OEM and kick sensor move from dealer. And no - I'm not going to DIY. Does the Uhaul hitch appear the same as the etrailer?

Does this definitely interfere or create issues with kickback sensor or does it just make it so have to kick to the left of center of hitch and perhaps not always have joy?

If I lose the kickback sensor functionality but don't have issues like random gate open I suppose I can live with it.

Anyone with uhaul hitch and 1up rack? Any issues?

Thanks all!

Another member 'darksky' posted here that his handsfree function for his tailgate no longer operated after installing aftermarket hitch (Curt, Reese, Drawtite, UHaul). On e-trailer website it appears that is common 'complaint.'

And while using any hitch-mounted bike rack, make sure you disable the auto tailgate function via the infotainment center, to avoid possible untimely tailgate auto-open damage.

Thanks for reply. Funny thing is after posting this I used the kick open with my hands full with a large basket. In two uses I’ve decided this is a luxury I can’t live without!

Have you considered the OEM hitch, kick sensor relocation bracket, wiring harness, and lower fascia? I had the Whole kit installed for about $700 (College Hills Honda, Wooster, OH). The OEM hitch tucks into a sweet little fascia cutout and looks perfect. At the risk of sounding critical, I just don’t understand why people spend 40k on a vehicle, hundreds (if not thousands) of $$ on bikes, $600 or more on a 1up, but try to skimp a couple hundred bucks on the hitch.

It wouldn't be so bad if the dealer price for the hitch, wiring harness and installation was reasonably priced.

the only thing I’ll be pulling is bikes. It’s not skimping a couple hundred - it’s 500+. That’s a pair of skis or a 1/2 the cost of a 5 day trip to snowbird or an extravagant meal with a spendy Bordeaux. It’s $900 of pre tax earnings. It’s…me not wanting to spend money I don’t have to if another hitch works fine.

The calculus is simply whether or not being able to kick open the hatch is worth $500 oop. If my PP didn’t have the kick it would be an easy decision.

I recently had a chat with a neighbor and the topic was about why others feel they can tell people how they should spend their hard earned money. 😄

I did the same as you. I paid the same and it really looks good. They added the sensor and it works great. I did a curt hitch on the Tiguan I had before and it hung down lower and looked awful.

The U-Haul hitch is going to sit a lot lower than the OEM, making the bike trays more likely to drag the ground, but I guess that also depends on if you are carrying 1 bike or 4?

I take my rack off when not using it (but mine is light weight) because I lose visibility of my rear view camera and I also get the object warning beeper going off any time I put it into reverse (very annoying).
If you have your rack on the vehicle you will want to disconnect the auto hatch kick sensor, I've had mine randomly open when walking close by the back of the vehicle. If this happens with the bike rack on it could be a costly mistake.
I also cover the hatch open/close button on the driver side door so I don't mistakenly open the hatch with the rack on.

If you are looking at the 1Up rack you should also look at the new improved version called the Mach 2, designed by the same person.

I had a uhaul hitch on my Infiniti FX37. With the 1up bike rack in the up position the automatic rear gate cleared it to open/close. I ride a lot so the rack will stay on.

I have no idea if with the uhaul rack which would sit lower whether the rear hatch would clear. Suppose I should see. I like having the kick open. Trading that function for ability to leave rack on and stowed and being able to open/close the hatch makes the decision easier. Maybe a uhaul rack and relocate the kick sensor.

the OEM looks cleaner but seeingjust the receiver sitting underneath isn’t that big a deal. Uhaul has video for PP which shows a very clean looking install
