The maintenance minder should bring up code 3 when change is needed. Here is the sub note for specific conditions.

*3: See information on maintenance and emissions warranty in the first column on page 589. If you drive in dusty conditions, replace every15,000miles(24,000km).

Don't know about your manual, but my 2020 Passport Owners Manual shows differently:
*3 refers to the dust/pollen filter
My 2020 manual:

Reading other forums with vehicles sharing our Honda ZF9 transmission (MDX, Pilot, Ridgeline, Odyssey), posters there indicate Maintenance Minder 3 typically pops up at between 50,000 and 60,000 miles

But as 19passportsport and others have posted, more frequent preventative maintenance will improve reliability and likely extend the life of your vehicle.

Thanks to everyone for their help! I am going to wait until 60k or when the Code 3 reminder comes on. Just to wrap up the discussion here, is there a filter inside the transmission? If so, can or should one change it?

I think you will find a transmission fluid change video or walk through helpful but I don't believe anyone here has done one. The only thing that comes close is the Rear Differential Fluid Change walk through by @DudeCS. Maybe a YouTube search will turn up something useful.

I am at 63K miles and ready to change the fluids in the transfer case and transmission. The transfer case is easy and straight forward, but I have to buy a quart of the gear oil. The transmission fluid is more involved. There are videos for the transmission fluid. TBD if I will DIY the transmission fluid.

Here is a video for changing the fluid for the transfer case (Honda Pilot)...

Considering his Pilot has a 6 speed transmission, is the fluid replacement procedure (and fluids) the same for the 6 Speed and the 9 speed?

Unfortunately, no. The 9 speed is not a spill and fill. It's an involved procedure that requires the wheels moving with the car lifted and a Honda scan tool. There are ways around this and there are folks that have done spill and fills thought. When the 9 speed first come out, the fluid was over $40/qt. it has since come down but it's very expensive.

Yes. I still have to confirm the quantity required. I thought it may be 4 quarts for the refill? To check the transmission fluid temperature, a suggestion was to use a handheld infrared temperature gun to check the transmission case. Also, VSA has to be put into maintenance mode. I've printed off the instructions and tried it. It is like rubbing your belly with one hand and your head with the other hand. That is, you have to follow the sequence precisely.

Just returned from a 3,200 mile trip, at 63K miles on the odometer. Currently, the shifts are not as quick and smooth. Definitely have to get the transmission fluid changed.

I guess the search for a Passport transmission fluid change procedure video continues...

This is from the Pilot forum. When the time comes I'll probably do a spill and fill with 3.5 qts. after I see more folks doing it.

Thanks @DudeCS and @14v6, if I need to change the transmission fluid I think I will trust and use the Honda Service Manual file you attached instead of the videos/Piloteers comments due to conflicting information. Some said do the fluid swap with the engine cold while some said make sure you warm the engine before draining the fluid, some said don't bother with VSA mode just drain and fill.
The guy in the last attached video said - "Cycle through all the gears" but the Honda Service Manual said do not go further than the 4th gear while lifted or the transmission gets damaged. He also filled from the top while the Service manual said fill from the Level Check hole.

How many miles are you at? They say that the transfer case should be changed at the same time. That's supposed to be an easy one, just have to source the HPO fluid. All I can say is there's a sticker on the trans that says something like fill with 3.5 qts. type 3.1 fluid. Some say that these transmissions are super sensitive to fluid level. My thoughts are if the factory fill is correct and if you drain cold fluid and refil with fluid at the same temperature how can you go wrong? Here's another video that sold me on the fill and spill.

Almost at the 50K mark, but summer trips will take it over 50K.
I think this video 👆 is nice and detailed but his procedure will probably take just a long as the Honda Service Manual procedure. I also don't understand why he opted to do equations and take ruler measurements of the transmission case when he could just follow the Service Manual directives he threw away at the beginning of the video. I'm going to borrow something from him though, I will section the Service Manual directives and print in larger font so I can follow the directives in steps.

I changed the 9 speed transmission fluid on my 2019 Honda Pilot several months ago. I let the car sit overnight on four wheel ramps in the garage so it was elevated and level. I then drained and measured the fluid that came out (3.75 quarts) and put in that exact same amount of new 3.1 ATF. Didn't do any temperature checks or even remove the level check plug. Car has continued to shift flawlessly the same as before the drain and fill. There is no filter to replace which can be found on the 6 speed transmissions.

I had right around 28000 miles when I did this fluid change. We drove on a 3 week 4500 mile vacation with a lot of highway and in town driving right after the fluid change.

Not concerned about the fluid level since I replaced exactly what amount came out and there were no abnormal shift qualities before or after the fluid change. There also were no leaks detected so I am confident I removed what was put in from the factory. I will be changing the fluid every 30000 miles or so UNLESS there is an indication of a leak or funky shifting. Then I will have a dealer do it to to make sure it is at the correct level.

My cost for four quarts of Honda 3.1 ATF was $87.28 and shipped with other items purchased for $21.38. Sure beats the dealer wanting to charge $300.00-$350.00 for the fluid change!
