On my way to work this am, south of Depoe Bay, I fishtailed along the highway on black ice. I didn't slam on my brakes, I let off the gas completely, going only about 40mph in a 55 zone, probably should've downshifted on the steering wheel paddle, but I lost control for too many seconds.

My Passport went in the other lane came back over a couple times. thankfully there was no one on that stretch of the highway or I certainly would’ve hit someone and one of us would’ve gone over into the ocean or forest. And literally after I regained control for what seemed an eternity there were multiple vehicles coming my direction.

🥶🥶🥶🥶

My heart skipped many beats, I lost my coffee and crap was all over the cargo area and back seat!

Thank God you weren’t hurt. It might be a good time to look into a set of the Blizzaks or studded tires.Oh and downshifting on black ice is just as bad as slamming the brakes. Not a great idea.

Happy to know you and the vehicle are safe and well. Your Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires are really good but they may not be the best for use in your new climate. Skidding on black ice can happen to anyone but I think you should consider switching your tires to something chunkier as an additional protection, if not this winter then before the next.

Check the old posts, there was a woman who drove on the ice roads in Alaska with her Passport. If memory serves me it was the same color as yours, and she said everyone there used the Blizzak tires.

Good save and don't let anyone critique how you did it. Not by any means trying to top your story but I had a situation about 25 years ago that scared me as well.

I was coming down Jean pass with a highboy load of generators that had smoothbore fuel tanks sloshing around and had a front blowout doing about 75mph. I did just as you plus used clutch to disengage cruise control. I let the truck come to a stop in 9th gear in the shoulder. I thought I was going to flip.

I had all kinds of drivers telling me what "I should have done". Well, I did not crash and saved both the truck and load. A wise retired sheriff once told me your first reaction is usually the correct one.

Oh boy Oregon coast!! I have went through that same section you have on my motorcycle. All day ride from Astoria down to the CA border in fog, drizzle, rain. My point being by you living there, you already have the skills to react correctly to almost any given situation.

Black ice is no joke at all. Looks no different than a wet road.

SUPER happy you are ok, but the tires you bought for HB, might not be the perfect fit for where you are now...

be safe...

Glad you are Ok. What a scare! Probably did the right thing in not downshifting.

my tires are: Michelin - Pilot Sport All Season - 275/45/R20.

If I go to our only local tire store, Les Schwab of course they will tell me I need something different for a least December-March, I just don’t know what’s best or necessary. I see cars with way crappier tires than mine.

Last year I was only driving 3 miles one way to work on a straight road but over the very windy Yaquina Bridge, now it’s 24 one way. Parts are windy and dark, the speeds vary 25-55mph, I should and could slow down at some parts. Thankfully, the one section I almost went over into the ocean ditch or forest was a straight away. After this morning, I miss the rain and fog because we won’t get ice then.

Watching the news and this is about what I felt like but on a single lane non divided Highway with a ditch on one side or a very large ocean on the other! 🥶

Glad your ok, it sounds like you handled the situation as good as anybody could in that situation. Are studded tires permitted where your at ?
I‘m not certain. And really don’t even know if they are needed?
See my above response, this is all new to me.

You could have embellished a bit - like you almost hit Sasquatch and had to use your awesome driving skills to avoid them and the squatch gave your the bird - glad to hear your ok
These Oregonians are kinda nuts about Sasquatch! 🤣
I should have at least tried to avoid hitting a deer or puppy before trying to go overboard!
But nope - just my lack of driving in cold weather experience here…

I noticed the Passport doesn’t chime when the temp goes down alerting the driver of black ice. Our Subaru Outback does chime at 39 and our Mini chimes at 37 degrees. If the roads look glossy it makes me take notice.

You got that right! In my previous car, a Nissan Altima FWD car, I would shift to neutral anytime I suspected black ice or very slippery conditions was making me slide. If the wheels keep turning you have a better chance of keeping control.
Not sure how that will work with this push button transmission stuff. Not a big fan.

If the roads aren't treated not much you can do with black ice. Be smooth and no jerky movements. When it's time for new tires there are better choices for where you live now. If everyone is running snows they're probably necessary. Glad it wasn't worse.
