I'm currently in the market for a new, safer vehicle. 90% of the time I'm commuting to work and driving my 2 yr old son home from my inlaws. My parents are considering selling me their 2019 Elite that has 9700 miles on it, in excellent condition for $30k. It has every single upgrade and option they could throw at it. Towing package with coolers, roof rack cross bars, all weather floor/cargo mats, etc. The only thing they don't have is the rear entertainment system.

How are the 2019's overall? Consumer Reports has some poor reviews but I also realize that most people out there will only submit gripes and not praises.

The other vehicle Im currently interested in is a 2018 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, mainly because the last 10% of my activities includes hunting, camping, fishing, offroading, shooting, etc. I know the Trailhawk will out perform the Passport off road, and it seemed equally comfortable.

The honda is safer, the Trailhawk maybe more fun for that last 10%. Both are better than my current 2007 F150..

How trail ready can you reasonably make a passport?

Thanks!

Had mine since April 2019 & 13,500 miles later.
No major issues. Love driving it and wish I had work or somewhere to drive it to.
Was a member of the clunk club, look up “clunk” in the search if you don’t know. - My Honda & Acura shop fixed it in the 8k service.
I get a low battery alert at least every two weeks, but sometimes the next day after driving it. Yet, it always tests fine. I quit caring after dozens of calls to Honda and the dealer to test if on a cold start. Neither ever called back.
No issues with my infotainment center, so I refuse to have the recall looked at. Plus I don’t want to possibly have an f’d up dash after they put it back together.

I’ve only owned the passport for 3 weeks but can comment on the jeep. Fiat is the parent company of Jeep, Dodge, Ram etc and have three words to say.
Google Jeep reliability
I bought a 15 trail hawk new and learned the hard way. 2 transmissions and then a buy back. Buyback clause was had to buy another jeep so went with a grand Cherokee. In 2016 they had a halt sale order due to…. Ready for this? Faulty transmissions!! Following the forums I learned about the software update and planned to sell it the day of the roll out due to problematic issues with it. Sold the Jeep that day. Dealer told me he couldn’t buy it on trade due to the halt sale. I told him they released a fix:). He comes back after calling jeep and completed the sale
Next couple of weeks I read the forums of all the problems. Trans would seize up on the highway led to more recalls and other issues with shifting, one even killed a Star Trek actor by running him over in the driveway. Fiat can’t write software if you paid them double!
Again look for yourself. Go to jeep and ram forums and read 1st hand. I know many unloading 2020s and 21s because of, ready for it???
Software issues, lol

Between the TrailHawk and the Elite...Elite.
The worst trade in value that I can find, for a "rough" 2019 Elite 9700 miles is $32,855
On the other hand a Trailhawk, or any Jeep for that matter other than a Wrangler, has bottom-of-the-barrel resale value. I bought a Liberty some years ago on a whim as a novelty vehicle for $26,000 and in less than three years it had lost $20,000 in market value while only having 34,000 miles on it. Most vehicles are depreciating assets but Chysler-Fiat-Jeep vehicles are the worst of the worst when it comes to holding value long term. Don't even get me started on reliability, rotten apples to fresh oranges comparing Jeeps to Hondas.

This August I will have my 20 Touring a year. I was in love with it for the first few months and now not so much. I did have a couple of problems, nothing major. To me it drives like a mini van, the transmission is clunky. I think the fit and finish is so so. The safety equipment sucks, mine constantly flashes brake.

I owned a Grand Cherokee 4WD (not the Trailhawk, just a Laredo but they haven’t updated it in like 10 years), and will say yes, it will definitely be better off-road, and look better doing it. On the road it drove extremely well and I enjoyed it.

The reasons I didn’t love it, compared to my PP:
  • Reliability of Jeeps suck, tho Grand Cherokee is the best of them, but nothing near Honda/Toyota level
  • Cargo capacity was quite low for the size. Passport in comparison has a ton of cargo space, which will come in handy hunting, camping, etc.
  • Chrysler management and service sucks
  • PP has much more interior room, and better interior overall. Jeep GC interior of 2021 is pretty much the same as my 2011, which didn’t wow me even back then.

I agree and sooner or later Fiat is going to thoroughly creep into Dodge and Ram too. Fiat = no good.
The same is currently happening with Volvo. The Swedes no longer own Volvo and the quality has also degraded.

Thanks everyone. I submitted a loan application with my bank yesterday for the Passport. Now I just have to wait to hear back from them, sign papers and get the Passport up here. (It’s in another state)
Congratulations, I'm sure they approved your request unless you are homeless, unemployed, are in arrears to the IRS or wanted for Insurance fraud.

Congrats, and buying used from someone you know is a huge advantage.
Cringe.

The old saying of, "Never do business with family or friends," has some merit.

I wish the OP the best of luck. 🤞🏻

Great vehicle. My PP ‘19 elite has 81k. Lots of highway trips from Nola to Wisconsin. Very solid smooth vehicle. Wish I got better than 23.3 mpg on highway but tons of cargo.

differential and transmission fluids are not cheap. I am not doing it myself, and I wonder If this less reputable dealer actually changes the fluid. Sometimes the shifting is clunky. It happens in lower gears. But car seems like a Honda.

the black color was a poor choice. Simply too hot for any climate but as far as reliable cars go, this is a Honda
