Just noticed a problem with my ‘19 EX-L‘s sunroof. Opens fine, whether pop up to vent or slide back to fully open. When in the vent position it also closes with no problem. The issue is when closing if from a slid back position. When I slide it forward to close, either manually holding the switch to the close position or auto close it reverses direction before it reaches the fully closed position.

Seems to be related to the flip up deflector at the front of the sunroof opening - as soon as the front edge of the sunroof reaches the deflector ”ramps” it appears to sense it as an obstruction and reverses and fully re-opens. I’ve only found two ways to close it fully:

1. Press and hold the close button and before it reaches the deflector let go of the button and give it brief taps to slide it a little bit at a time. This will get it past the reversing point and eventually allow it to close.
2. Press the switch to the auto close position and quickly jump out of the car and manually push down the deflector, the sunroof will continue on its path and close fully.

The deflector and tracks are free of obstructions and the small springs and plastic lead up ramps have a fair amount of white grease. Something in the mechanism is sensing the deflector as an obstruction but noting about the deflector feels or looks any different now compared to when the sunroof was working ok.

Anyone else had this happen? I know the answer is to take it in but curious whether it’s a motor issue or just a slap-some-grease-on-it issue.

Thanks,
Bob

Sounds like you need to "reset" the sunroof. I found this on another Honda forum, so I'm not certain whether any of these will work:

Method 1:
TURN THE IGNITION TO THE ON POSITOIN

1. hold the auto open button and keep holding it until 3 seconds after the roof is open.
2. Hold the auto close button and hold until 3 seconds after the roof is closed.

Method 2: Moonroof glass is positioned in the OPEN position (or partially open)
1. Press the moonroof OPEN switch until the moonroof stops in its fully open position.
2. Release the moonroof OPEN switch.
3. Press the moonroof OPEN switch again for about 13 seconds .
NOTE: Keep pressing the switch even though the moonroof motor continues to function.
1. Calibration is complete. The moonroof will automatically move to the regular preset fully open position and come to stop.

Method 3: Moonroof glass is positioned in the TILT position
1. Press the moonroof OPEN switch until the moonroof glass stops in its fully open position.
2. Release the moonroof OPEN switch.
3. Press the moonroof OPEN switch for about 13 seconds .
NOTE: Keep pressing the switch even through the moonroof glass will repeat an inching behavior (moving 40 mm , then stopping for 0.4 seconds )
1. Calibration is complete. The moonroof will automatically move to the regular preset fully open position and come to stop.

Method 4:
1. Close driver’s door, leave it closed during the whole procedure.
2. Turn ignition to LOCK (0).
3. Press and hold the tilt switch, and turn ignition to ON (II).
4. Release the tilt switch, and turn ignition to LOCK (0).
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 four times.
6. Check if the AUTO OPEN and AUTO CLOSE function still work. If they still work, the AUTO functions have not been cleared, go back to step 1. If AUTO functions have been cleared, go to step 7.
7. Press and hold the moonroof open switch for at least 3 additional seconds after the moonroof is fully opened.
8. Press and hold the moonroof close switch for at least 3 additional seconds after the moonrood is fully closed (tilted).
9. Confirm that the moonroof control unit is reset by using the moonroof AUTO OPEN and AUTO CLOSE function.

Hi Hubb, I found similar instructions late yesterday on a Civic site. Tried them and it looks like my sunroof is back to normal. Not sure which of the steps actually fixed it but will say method 4 was almost impossible to complete due to the push button start and retained power.

Regardless, looks to be working now - thanks for the help.

You're most welcome. You probably got it from the same place that I did. I noticed that there was a large thread of folks over on the Piloteers forum with this same kind of issue, but they didn't have the reset procedure detailed there. I figured it was worth having here in case more Passporters begin to encounter the same issue.

Hi Bob!
Say, why would you even want a sun roof in the 'cuse since it’s always raining or snowing and as we both know, there is no sun lol!
Just kidding.
Me and my wife just just left Liverpool and settled in NC.
If it wasn’t for the snow and cold, we'd still be there.
SU basketball is looking good right now.
LET'S GO ORANGE!

Thanks Bob! The inching forward technique worked for me!

I think that's the same problem I have. When I press close it closes then opens the vent. I press close again but it fully opens again. I press close again only to have it close and open the vent again repeat repeat repeat
