Say you need a tow and car wont start. How would you shift into neutral?

Hook up a jumpbox or jumper cables hooked to someone else’s battery.

It’s the same way with gear shift knobs/levers, you still need power to move the shifter.
I read somewhere to never tow a AWD vehicle because you could mess up the transmission. The car has to be carried on a flatbed truck. You may want to check it out.

For the AWD with 9-speed transmission there is a special tool available. See page 6, Appendix C. (last page). Note: eBay has your best price.

Great, now we have everyone in AHM's cell phone numbers. :)

Does this tool apply to the Passport? In the attachment it says:
  1. The Acura TLX V6, Acura MDX, and Honda Pilot Touring and Elite models

Yes it does, that “Vehicle Handling Manual” was published in 2015 which is probably why the Passport isn’t listed.

I wonder if tow companies know about this and have the tool. With so many newer cars having similar shift by wire transmissions I would hope this is common knowledge among them.

OK, $50 on eBay vs $260 from Honda seems like a no brainer. I'll spring the $50 to have peace of mind I do have the tool should I need it.

Wowza:

"The Acura TLX V6, Acura MDX, and Honda Pilot Touring and Elite models with the
Shift-By-Wire (SBW) transmission will be in Park and cannot be shifted to Neutral
with the engine off. Once notified, the DFR will expedite delivery of a special tool (to
be returned) to shift the SBW transmission to Neutral"

Really? omg

This is correct. I have this right now lots of power but wont crank for some reason.

Try putting in neutral comes up and says it has to be running, so it is blocking in our running vehicle. Great eh?

Should be interesting if the road side guy shows up with the right tool to load it up.
No fun to be on the side of the road and needing a "Honda-only" tool huh. Heck the doc implies that not even all dealerships would have this thing.

I found it on eBay but it was $149. Where did you find it for only $50? Thanks!
Wow, I snagged one yesterday for $50 bucks, and today they've boosted the price to $150. Must have had a run on them and decided to see what the market would bear! Sorry pshadoa! This is the revised listing:

Not only that, mine was "free shipping" and the new listing has a $6 charge for that!
Thanks for getting back. I will check again in coupe of weeks.

Same here I got mine for $50 with free shipping. I'd agree that perhaps this forum generated enough hits to their site that they felt like they could jack up the price. It's insane that Honda is charging $260 for this.
I found this one thru a Honda parts store for $175. Sent an email to my Honda boys to see if I can get one thru them for less.

Another thought, those who have run into the issue with tow trucks or road side service that don’t carry them, are you in more rural or sparsely populated areas? I really don’t go to those places yet - when I get to Oregon that will change.
