Most of the time its pretty smooth. But, every so often. When going slow and when it up/down shifts from 3rd gear. Its rough and you feel it in the seat. It some what throws ya back a little. So, not sure whats going on. Bought brand new in March and now have a little over 4600 miles on it. Its going in for its first oil change very soon since it is at 10% oil life remaining. Think I will most likely mention it. Does Honda have a newer software update for the transmission maybe to shift smoother fixing something like that? I hope its not the start of early transmission failure out of no where.

What speed range do you have this issue? Could be the dog clutch.
I complained about this on another thread. but nothing jolting in the seat. 5500 miles on my Passport.
No software update as of 12/29/2019

oh yeah, don’t forget your gear starts at 2nd.

I encountered some rough shifting on occasion as well. Generally, it is in areas that traffic sucks on the highway and I need to quickly slow down, then speed back up and it happens around the 20-30 mph range. Sudden slow downs and acceleration in that speed range is generally the only time I have experience any rough shifting though. All other times its very smooth.

I’m pretty sure it’s the changes that use the dog gears. That coupled with the cylinder deactivation system turning off/on. I wouldn’t say I get rough shifting anymore but get a clank sound that is audible if I don’t have my music up. Unfortunately, I think it’s just part of this trans design and the cylinder deactivation magnifies it at times.

Any where from 15-25 it seems. Reading the comments not to concerned about it now and seems to be the nature of the vehicle. Will keep an eye out as time goes by if it gets worse. S mode does not start out in second gear correct? S seems more punchy and willing to move but shifting is not as smooth as D.

you are correct s mode starts in first gear.
some people also called the s mode: the Sports mode, but, the current manual doesn't say "sports". Maybe they changed it. S mode hold the gear longer, so it doesn't sound as smooth.
I was messing with the S mode and manual the other day, too much hand/foot/eye/ear coordination like playing a video game. I decided that I better just stick with D in traffic.

I also had problem with gear ruff shifting between 20 to 35. I have taken it to the dealership and they said that is normal. The same thing happened in the 8 speed transmission on the accord. The dealership told me Honda fixed the problem. I don’t understand why they can’t fix this. So I had them document it in my car’s records if something would happen later.

Taking it in on Tuesday. Taken a turn for the worse and it’s really bad now. It also made a loud bang that we felt and heard while in snow mode. Fingers crossed we won’t need a new transmission and it’s something easily fixable.

Took it in today and they spent 1 1/2 hours running diagnostics etc and trying to find an issue. Nothing. Said they had their best guy on it that has 25+ years experience. So chasing a ghost atm but has been documented. I was afraid this was going to happen. So it’s a wait and see approach. I might have just got unlucky with a finicky transmission but working with in spec and design per Honda. Bummer.

Have you tried to do the transmission reset (to relearn) your driving habits?

All car model forums (not only Honda & Acura) feature some variation of zf9 issue(s). Some go back years, some only days. Many have been claimed as "resolved" via software updates. On Mod Forums/Youtube, a transmission reset is to turn on ignition, foot off brake (do not want Start). Once ignition is on, foot on gas pedal full down for 30 seconds (and not less). Turn off ignition. Start car.

We got a complete transmission failure. I barely made it home tonight. Thank goodness I was some what close. Tow truck in coming will explain more later. Bought brand new barely 8,500 miles on it. Not a happy camper.
