Roof Rail Install and Wear Question

2786 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  CHEFERMAN65

In watching this (quite tedious, 13:30 is the part) video on how roof rails are installed, it makes me wonder. Over time will water seep in where you cut the molding and then rust? To me it looks as if that could happen, but would be curious other's opinions.

Page 5 of the guide below might help articulate what I'm asking.

hello there, about ur concern on water seepage, u can use water resistant adhesive to completely seal the area. I guess it will sway ur concerns on water seepage!
Yeah I was thinking that something like that would work!
I had to remove both rail weather trim pieces to install my roof rack. The channel is painted so I don't see how it would rust.

When the water gets in the channel, where does it flow to? Under the rear trim piece?

Yep, then down the back between the body and rear hatch/lift gate.
As far as rusting, the cut trim piece is aluminum so no worries there, the channel is a painted surface, so unless it's damaged/scratched it shouldn't either.
As it's not sealed, water is already getting in.
