Has anyone put their bikes upright on crossbars without taking the wheels off? The passport is already sort of tall vehicle and wondering at 5 8’ if i should just look into a hitch rack instead or get a ladder lol.

I used roof racks for years, but now have a hitch rack. I had the roof racks that removed the front wheels and the type that require no tire removal, if you have a tall vehicle they can be a pain in the ass and I’m 6’1”, it got to the point that I would bring a two step ladder. You’ll have to remind yourself that the bikes are on your roof when stopping at a Starbucks or when pulling into your garage, I screwed a hook into the bottom of my garage door and hung a sign from it so when I got home and opened the garage my bright orange sign reminded me to remove my bikes. Another thing at least with mtn bikes if it’s been raining and the trails are muddy, that mud along with your chain/cassette lubricants will run down the side of your vehicle.

The hitch type are much easier, the only negatives I have with them is with the price of today’s bikes it could easily cost $10k to replace them, and the other is once the bikes are loaded the tires can block your brake lights and blinkers. l’ve never used the hitch type that holds the bikes vertically by the front tire but they carry more bikes and seem to not block the tail lights as much.

@Powdertrax That's a good idea about the garage sign! I saw a picture of 4 bikes crushed on the roof of a car pulling into the garage and that is when I purchased my hitch mount carrier.

My buddy did that with my bike on his roof, luckily I had full suspension so when my seat hit the header it compressed my shock, but it bent both of his crossbars and where the towers contacted his roof it left four dents the size of a small plate. The only thing it did to my bike was tear the seat, and yes I’ve seen those same pics/videos, easy way to destroy ten grand in bikes

Roof racks are for sedans and wagons. Go with a hitch setup for this vehicle. Cost is virtually the same and the rack can easily be removed and kept in a basement/garage/shed when not being used. Getting a bike up on the roof of this vehicle, especially one where you dont take the front wheel off, is going to be a major PITA. The vehicle is way too tall, especially for someone only 5'8", even if you use a small step ladder. Im 5'5" so I can say that :).
Got a Yakima DoubleUp to add to my existing Exo hitch system. The whole setup is pricey, but I love how much I can do with the Exo (cargo, bikes, table, baskets, skis, boards, and making my own accessories with some base cleats I picked up separately).
