Question about Welcome Lights (Side, Running Board, Tailgate)

Question for the folks that have welcome lights installed on their passport. Either side, running board, tailgate, or all. Under what circumstances do the lights turn on? I've had toyota vehicles (Avalon and RAV4 Limited) equipped standard with similar lights; Toyota refers to them as puddle lights. In both cases, the lights were located on the bottom side of the driver and passenger side mirrors, and they would light up when the car detected someone with a keyfob approaching the vehicle. It was an ideal config and a very nice affect because the ground would light up just as you were approaching the door. You don't have to push any buttons or lock or unlock the doors, just the presence of the keyfob in close proximity to the car is what makes the lights come on. They also turn on with a slow fade effect, which is pretty cool. Does the Honda implementation work in exactly the same way, or do the welcome lights light up under different circumstances?

They are not "approach" lights. They come on when you unlock the vehicle through any means (keyfob, button on door handle, touching the door handle, or opening a door/tailgate) and fade in the same manner as your interior lights, depending on how you have your vehicle settings configured.

Thank you for the response, appreciate it. I did go ahead and install the lighted running boards so I understand the behavior now, but thanks again. For what it's worth, I am very happy with them.
