"Passed" on the Passport

Went to the dealership (Chicago area) on Saturday to test drive the Passport. Been researching and waiting for past 6 months (including reading a lot of the posts on this forum). While we liked it, we didn't love it. Add to that they didn't want to budge off of MSRP so even though we don't need the 3rd row we went with the Pilot instead. Saved $5,000 and got more car for the money. I realize the comparison of the two models isn't exactly Apples to Apples but at the end of the day when you make your monthly car payment you want to feel like you are getting your money's worth.

Appreciate everyone's insights and sharing of information, it really helped us become educated on the pros and cons of the Passport. All the best!!

Congrats on your purchase. I understand your logic and I may do the same when I check them out.

Good point. Can't say I blame you. (and congrats!)

This dealership in the Chicago area is advertising invoice on their Passports. Not sure what the catch is.

Good move. The Pilot is a great SUV in its own right. Looks and drives great.

Looks like they've added at least splash guards, door edge protectors, and pinstripes. There's probably also "nitrogen tire fill" and several other dealer add-on items that will all be added to the price with great margins when you actually show up at the dealer.
Well done! Honda is making every effort to gouge buyers on the Passport, because it's a brand new offering. The more people who resist, the sooner pricing will move from MSRP. I see the Passports piling up at local dealers and have yet to see one out on the road...........

Great deal! More car for less money. And you can get the same AWD system, and better MPG.
Only .8" difference in ground clearance.
Enjoy.

My local dealer has 37 Passports (LOL - Really) - while most other So. Cal. dealers have between 4 and 7 Passports:

I've been watching their inventory since the Passport was released (Feb 4) and they have ONLY SOLD 2!

Passported to a Pilot.... I am preferring that Idea to. Longer back end, better Honda transmission
on the Lower trims, (no S/S). 18" wheels, 10 LED backup lights, better MPG, and you can get cloth seats with the 8"screen. I can lower the 2nd and 3rd row seats for truck like cargo area. No Black wheels or mirrors. And save about 5000! Hard to pass up that good deal.

When you consider the current CR-V oil/gas and lack of heat issues, and the apparent lack of proper market research on the new Passport, me thinks Honda needs to get their "act together".
As a further thought, I am not married to any brand so I can jump ship at any time... my concern now is the possibility of lost trade in or resale value. Cars are expensive enough without losing your fanny when you trade every few years. Honda is a big disappointment.....

I can speak to an alternate reason why they aren't selling at OC Honda World in Westminster and it has nothing to do with the Passport. Skip to the bottom if you want to get to the point and don't want to read a long and sorted tale...

I also saw the stock that they claimed to have online and it looked like they had the AWD EXL in Modern Steel that I was looking for. After reaching out, a sales rep confirmed that they had it and I scheduled a test drive. After my wife got off work, we prepared for the hour and a half drive to see the car. I called back to double check that they had the car and was told that it was in fact a Pilot, not a Passport but that they found a matching one in "storage" and that we should come down, it would be waiting for us.

We get there and the sales person that I've been communicating with is no where to be found and a new salesman starts in on us. Agressively trying to convince us how much we should like the Silver Touring which turns out to be the only AWD version he has. There is no Modern Steel, there is no "storage" lot but he tried to stall us while they bring something from another dealership. After we pressed him on it he told us they sold the EXL we called about earlier that day (I just checked and it's still listed on the site) but that he had another one and it was close by. We give it the benefit of the doubt and agree to negotiate price while the car comes from wherever it supposedly is. Remember, we confirmed twice on the phone exactly what we needed and were assured it was there... lies.

The negotiation started out very rough as they were asking MSRP plus 2000 markup since it was such a new car. We wanted to find out the price of the Adventure Package and to see the difference between the EXL and Touring since you already have the rails on the touring. The "let me ask the manager" game started and we had 3 trips to the Man Behind the Curtain and they still didn't know what the Adventure Package included, and only had 1 price for it (that was 500 more then I was quoted at New Century Honda in Glendale). He finally admitted that the Passport wouldn't get there before closing, and never showed us any inventory paperwork or a VIN number to make me believe it existed at all. We left frustrated, angry, and lied to, and after having a very aggressive and uninformed sales experience (we were told the Passport had 19 inch wheels among many more inaccuracies).

The only good thing that happened is that we did get to test drive a touring and we fell in love with the upgraded audio system and decided to expand our search to include the Touring. After driving home having wasted 5 hours in the experience, we were happy to find out that the Touring was available from our preferred local dealer in Glendale as they had a white one to trade with another dealership and 72 hours later we had our Passport.

The moral of the story is that I don't believe OCHonda World in Westminster has the inventory they claim to have and even if they did, thier lack of sales are the fault of a terrible sales experience and shouldn't be used as a criticism of the Passport. Do yourself a favor and shop elsewhere.

You're way more patient that I would have been. Especially after driving that far to see a phantom vehicle!!!!

It’s more than just 0.8”. Better angles. Better maneuverability off-road. Maybe more aggressive i-VTM4. Better suspension...i heard that they used the Ridgeline parts.

And the best thing......if you get Elite, then you still has the a bench 2nd row!! I hate the captain chair trend!

Sounds like it. You were very informed/proactive and still got the run around!
Speaking of true inventory, is there a way for us to tell FOR SURE what a dealership's inventory is? Even the "Inventory Search" on Honda's website doesn't seem to be 100% accurate.

I'm with you there. I would seriously consider a Pilot Elite if a bench seat was available instead of captains chairs.

Maybe more aggressive i-VTM4.
I've wondered about this. I'm curious to know if the Passport's i-VTM4 is tuned closer to Acura's SH-AWD system, or if it's closer the the Pilot's i-VTM4 system.

Same for me. I really love the Pilot Elite panoramic roof, but want a 2nd row bench, and don't want the Rear Entertainment System. If I could get it this way, I would have it already...

I think you have to do what David did. Speak directly to a specific salesperson and have them tripple-check the inventory vs. your requirements. Emphasize the importance of your pending visit and the need to have the EXACT vehicle you are interested in. Sadly, you have to sound like a borderline jerk these days to avoid getting lackadaisical service.
