"Over-The-Air" System Updates for Passport - How often do they come out? Current System Versions?

Hello,

New owner here of the 2021 Honda Passport EX-L . I have a loose question related to the "Infotainment System" / Dashboard System of the Passports. How often do updates come in from Honda? Do they actually ever come in? or is this something that only Dealers can update

My General Question are:

- Is there a way to check the version of the "Factory Installed Radio/Infotainment system"?

- Is there another version of the SYSTEM version for the whole car, start/stop systems, Cameras, LKAS, etc... is there a way to check the version?

- Do updates come in when you have the car connected to a WIFI via a paired phone (hotspot mode) , or just when you have it attached directly to your router/access point?

- Is this something that can be access via the "Debug" mode from the head unit? Lets say I would like to look at the past issues with the infotainment system , and the feared noise, is there a way to look up if that is happening. As I understand there is still 'No general Fix for that issue plaguing Pilots/Passports and Odysseys, which i find totally bizarre, from Honda Manufacturing Inc? How can they let it happen for so long with no fix.... unreal...

Feel Free to Geek out, like I said we just got the 2021 EX-L and, well getting to know how often to expect an update.

Thanks You all!, Marek

My understanding, which is very limited, is that any updates or changes are applied directly from the dealership. The only -- over the air updates -- that I am aware of pertains to the navigations system. The infotainment system is indeed a weak link for Honda reliability.

I have an EX-L, which does not have navigation, but it does connect to my home wifi and I do have the update icon on the head unit. In 2.5 years I have only received 1 single update. I don't recall now what that update did, though.

The infotainment system stores specific failure or shutdown events that can be accessed via the Dealer Diagnostics Menu, however, it does not store all error events and the error messages store are not very descriptive so if your intention of entering the diagnostics menu is to narrow down what needs to be fixed so you can carry out the repair then you are not in luck, only the dealer tech have specific instructions on what to do about specific error messages.

The infotainment (crackling/popping) issue plaguing the Passport is limited to the 2019-2021 model years, a few 2022/23 owners have reported infotainment issues but those are rare and I don't believe they are identical to the catastrophic failures in the 2019-2021 years. Honda has several fixes for the 2019-2021 infotainment problems but the fixes are complex to conduct, it may involve taking apart the dash or gutting out the entire vehicle if the floor harness has to be replaced. A successful rectification depends on the technical expertise and experience at the dealer you take your car to carry out a fix. Some owners do the fix just once and the issue never returns but some find that they have to return as many as four times before they get a successful and permanent fix.

Honda generally does not update individual systems like cameras, LKAS, RDM, ACC etc. unless there is a major event that demands an update, all these systems work with the software that was installed at the factory. The recent update to the Idle Stop system is due to a safety investigation by the NHTSA which helped Honda come to the realization that the battery and the starter are being subjected to loads of pressure. And the also recent update to the TCU (Telematics Control Unit) was due to the fact that Honda installed a 3G modem in it and US phone networks were shutting down their 3G networks. If you recently purchased a pre-2022 Passport you should check to confirm that the previous owner carried out the update, if the update was not done before it expired then you meed a completely new TCU if you wish to use any of your Passport's inbuilt communication functions.

Agree with Hubb's post above, my Passport is also auto-connects to our home wifi. The only update that my 2020 Passport downloaded and installed (that I am aware of) was in January, 2022, an OTA Update for TSB 22-001.
There have been previous OTA updates, see posts below:

thanks for the exhaustive write up. Answers so many questions for me!!! Big Thanks.
I will have to figure out what this TCU is and what is does. And actually no idea if it was updated. My iPhone connects just fine and I was able to place a call via the connected iPhone. But again will have to read up on it

Such a disappointment that there was only one over the air update in so long.

I will have to find a spare USB. To play with that usb.Honda.com update website.

Lots more to read. ;).
Thanks for the PDF link. I already downloaded the pdf to the computer because it’s just easier to index and find info!

have a blessed day!

Kinda wish Honda would have something similar to Tesla but then again Tesla has issues with their entire system freezing up as well. I guess you gotta pick your battles.
The trouble with over the air software updates is the manufacturer, without your permission can suddenly, for example change your seat heaters to a subscription basis, forcing you to pay an annual fee if you wish to continue to use that feature. I read that Tesla is considering using their OTA updates this way.

After you purchased the vehicle? I highly doubt it - you got any proof of this happening post purchase?
As I said I read about it (on the internet) and you know you can believe everything you read on the internet. :)

There is also a "rumor" or a "rumor of a possibility" that if you stop making payments on your Tesla, it will use the "self driving" feature to leave your driveway in the middle of the night, or leave you stranded while out in town. and return to "killer Tesla base" but that is not happening either.... but its possible, and at that time "subscriptions" are the least of our worries. =)

The easiest way is to just hit the kill switch and then send a repo co. to the exact coordinates to legally take back what is essentially a stolen vehicle (not upholding the loan agreement) at that point. Takes away any driverless vehicle liability + extends the debt on recovering it for the dead beat.

BidumB has already indicated he wants all new vehicles to have a factory installed kill switch by 2030 or 2035.

How's that for freedom?

I know, politics. But it's not my politics, it is public information. I have the receipts.
