Hey everybody - I'm lurking this site as a potential buyer. Currently have a 17 honda ridgeline that I really like but I miss having an SUV and the bed is rather small for my surfboards. PP may be just right for me? I do not want or need 3rd row seats but prefer a large flat area back there. Before the truck I drove Isuzu Troopers for almost 20 years and they were great. Looking forward to learning more and seeing what everyone here is up to! Thanks🤙

Have you checked to see if your board will fit?
I don‘t think a longboard will and we don’t have a pop out cargo window.
Other than that...they are great vehicles!

Can always leave rear tailgate ajar and use some rope 🤔🤔🤔
You could...
I thought about that when I had to get a 12’ piece of trellis a few weeks ago and didn’t want to risk it.
So I called my neighbor with a truck!

Most of my boards are 6'4" or under - want to be able to lay at least 3 in there on a diagonal if possible. Have not been able to try this at all. Do you put boards in yours? Also if I am taking my step ups (6'6"- 7'6" max) I am assuming I can lay the passenger side seat down and get them in there. Have not seen any of these dims on any site. TIA

That length should fit. My neighbors have some 7-8’ longboards and that will be a challenge.

found these dimensions deep in the archives.
  • back hatch to front seat (76 inches when front seat is all the way back)
  • back hatch to front seat with the seat all the way forward (87 inches)
  • width of 60/40 back seats (drivers side = 28 inches to start of wheel well; passenger side = 18 inches to wheel well) = 46 inches total

And I don’t surf, yet along put more than a toe in the water in the summer months if my nephews are visiting. Plus if I had sand in any of my Honda’s I would get 🤬🤬

Err... Perhaps I'm under thinking this, but a Roof Rack/Strap would be the best, no? Also, I believe you could get a utility rack for the truck, which would allow for the same over the cab capability. You wouldn't be driving a PP though, so may go with the the first suggestion.

Hi. We are similar people. I had a 2007 ridgeline that barely fit my larger boards in the bed. My nice wave board is a 6'3 for reference. I loved the ridgeline but the bed was not great for my music gear and I would get nervous running into a rest stop with my boards in the back.

I have had a Passport for about two years now. Definitely loving the cargo space. All my boards and skis fit easily. The downer is that messy stuff was better off in the bed obviously. I bought the cargo liner for the back but I would recommend getting the seatbacks as well. Overall it's been a great activity car.

The ridgeline however is still my favorite in all the things that really matter. The passport seats kind of suck for me. I slide around when turning and the seat feels very short. If you need any backsupport pillows or wedges there is not enough bench. The ridgeline handles better overall. The extra height of the passport really affects the handling. There is a lot of body lean. The ridgeline barely leans and I miss that so much. I also dislike the sporty tires. The rims are huge and the tires are practically loprofile. Harsher ride for sure.

Wow! All of you are really great! Thanks so much for taking the time! I measured my bed diagonally in the ridge - just a hair over 6'4" which is right in practice as my 6"6" or up end up riding shotgun w me. I could do racks bars etc. but that defeats the purpose of the SUV for me. I will take 2-4 boards sometimes and depending on the waves choose accordingly. I need the boards to be secure so have a tonneau cover on the truck which means only 2 in the bed. I also have a ladder rack but that is really for ladders or my kayak. Yes the Ridgeline drives like a dream, seats are great etc. I always thought I was a slow driver, but realized I never had such a fast car! (Troopers, VW vans etc)
Anyone know how long it is between the dash and the tailgate? I could stack boards there and have other gear behind me. I have a friend w the Element and he does this and loves it!

I don’t know anything about hauling surf boards, but I traded in a 2008 Ridgeline with about 100,000 mi for a 2020 Passport Elite AWD about seven months ago. I no longer needed a pickup and the SUV is a better fit. I will say that the Ridgeline drove and rode much better than the PP. The Ridgeline’s longer wheelbase, fatter tires, and tuning made for a much more stable and softer ride. In fact, the Ridgeline had the most comfortable ride of any vehicle I have ever owned, and in my 79 years I have owned a bunch. I also miss all the convenient storage spaces in the Ridgeline, both in the passenger compartment and the well under the bed.
I like all the new electronic gadgets on the PP and the body style. I hope it gives me as good service as the Ridgeline.

What other cars did you PP owners test drive and compare?
Would love to hear your thoughts.
Toyota? Hyundai etc?

Only Honda’s for me. The list is in my signature.

And not sure where you are at, but in HB you can’t barely leave a surfboard (or bicycle) visible in your vehicle at the beach and for sure not on the street parking over night. So you might want to think about dark tinted windows and then even cover them with a couple of black towels.

Thanks - yes I keep a low profile - but only have boards in the car while I am in the water. One thing with the Ridgeline was getting a key made for the door. I need to lock the fob in the car and have a way to get in. Most places wouldn't make a key for me but a locksmith shop finally did and I just wear that key around my neck while surfing and lock the fob inside. (keyless start)

I see many vehicles parked at the beach with the lock boxes (like a realtor uses) attached to the door handle.
There have been too many instances of people leaving their key in a bag or the old school hide a key box under their vehicle on the beach while they surf and watched by someone with bad intentions.
