Hi!

Just got a new 2023 Passport and I'm wondering what's the suggested use for the parking break. TBH, I only used it occasionally on my previous car without problems but I think I should always use it.

I live in Canada in cold weather if that changes anything.

Grew up with manual trans and I'm just in the habit of always using the parking brake. not a huge fan of the foot e-brake but it does remind me of my dad's pickup way back when. Wish the PP had the push/pull parking brake that uses an electric motor to set like my wife's Odyssey. Can never have enough draw on the ole battery ya know!

I use it all the time. I don’t like the idea of the transmission holding the weight of the car when there’s a slight incline that’s hard to detect. I use it every time.

I never use it. On an incline obviously it should be used but even on a mild incline I never think to use it. Now if you live in San Fran parking on those hills it's probably unheard of to not use it. I remember when I first started driving I had a 'preowned' 1982 Ford escort I think it was, I used the parking brake all the time and the cable eventually broke. Basically it was just like the thin metal cables your bicycle's brakes had to engage it. I've never bothered with it since and never had a transmission problem with any vehicle I've ever owned. Had a boatload of other problems but never transmission, knock on wood. Even with that Escort, after 100k miles the transmission was almost the only part that didn't fail on it.

drove manuals for the first 16 years so I was used to using the parking brake so I use mine on my driveway and inclines.

Learn on a manual so I used it. 46 years later I still set the parking brake every time I park. Don't even realize I do it, it's like automatic.

I don't mind the manual foot operated parking brake, (less to potentially go wrong) but with all the other electronic gizmos and nannies I'm utterly baffled that Honda didn't go with a button activated electronic parking brake. Even my wife's 2011 Hyundai Optima came standard with a electronic parking brake.

Every single time every single vehicle for the last 47+ years. I have never had a cable fail. The electronic parking brakes are pretty cool. The Subaru Outback I test drove had one and it was an awesome feature. Auto off when taking out of park and on when put in park.

I only use it on inclines. The only place I can honestly remember using it is at one of our daughter's home.

I do on hills, and I never used the parking brake on autos prior to this rig. That nasty popping sound the transmission makes shifting out of park when its on the pawl can't be good.

Unless some of the members are joking with tongue in cheek, this thread creeps me out. I cannot imagine anyones negligence with a deliberate act of not setting their brake. Even more scary is the fact that they are not going to change.

This is safety 101 folks. Relying on a plastic parking pawl to stop a rolling vehicle is insane. Never mind the damage to transmission that can occur.

Also very disturbing. Over the years I have seen countless instances of runaway vehicles left in unattended with no parking brake engaged.

BTW, I don’t find it funny at all that the motoring public is blindly climbing the pyramid.
