I have a Touring with trailer hitch that has the adapter for the hands free kick feature that works about 50% of the time. However, the real issue is that the hatch has come down on it's own 5-6 times while my head was under it. Both feet on the ground. Key in my pocket, not being squeezed. Going to get in to the dealer. Wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem.

Are the hydraulics not holding or does it actually make the beeping noise and the motor engages?

If it works the way it should 50% of the time but several times when you're just standing there then it sounds like the alignment of the sensor may be way off. An issue with the way whoever mounted it I'd imagine.

just bought passport last week and this is happening to me too!!! I don’t understand and it’s dangerous. Happens randomly, especially when I’m leaning into the trunk to do something. I have tow hitch as well. Questioned whether I was pressing key but also was in a big loose pocket. Did you get any information from dealer about this? Thanks!

If you are leaning into the trunk, you are probably triggering the sensor which is on the right side (right bump on the bumper valance). It is basically a proximity sensor with the antennas on the right side, behind that right bump. To use the handsfree tailgate feature reliably, you just need to put your shin in front of that right bump if you have a hitch installed. Without the hitch, use the left bump on the valance.

to the manual the Tailgate should automatically reverse if it meet resistance. Bring to the dealership to be checked. I tested it on my 2021 Elite when I got it and mine works.
