Interior Rattles and Pops

Hello,

Let me begin by saying that I really do like my Passport. It does everything I want it to do and is comfortable while doing it. There is a problem though.

Since about the 2nd month of ownership, the rattling and popping and clicking from the interior panels began. It was tight and quiet up to that point. I have spent many hours taking the interior apart and putting sound dampener between rubbing or touching surfaces. I took apart the rear lift gate and shut a bunch of stuff up inside of there. At this point, I have done all I can do since I have removed every plastic panel and quieted them as much as possible. I have quieted all of the rattles coming from underneath the middle row seats (a lot going on under there that is pure stupidity on Honda's part with loose pieces and latches that vibrate). There are still loud pops and rattles that happen over the damn expansion joints that have lifted themselves up 2 inches like ledges in this city. I am an admitted "rattle" snob. I hate them. I've managed to completely quiet down every car, SUV and truck we've owned over the years.... but this one is killing me.

I need someone to talk me down from offloading this otherwise awesome vehicle. Does anyone else notice the shoddy-built rattling going on inside (especially from the rear cargo area)? Am I asking too much from a $42K vehicle? Is peace and quiet in the cabin now reserved only for the $90K vehicles? I'm not talking about road noise... simply the rattling of plastic parts.

Oh yeah, and if you can think of somewhere inside that I may have missed please let me know.

Thank you!

I truly don't mean any disrespect, but this sounds like a deeper issue than just that of the car. I consider myself a pretty detail oriented person with some diagnosed and treated OCD sprinkled on top. That said, I've never noticed any excess snap, crackle, or pop in my Passport.

Any car you get will have these same "issues," probably even the ones in the six figure range. Just try to enjoy your awesome car.

No disrespect taken. I know that I'm "crazy" about rattles in my cars.. :) You give sage advice indeed. And thank you for letting me know that your Passport doesn't rattle too much. It could be, though, that if you drove it on the horrible streets in my town you might find some.

Mine makes a pop sound when accelerating quickly as well as rattles in the door handles when playing music. It's rather cheap feeling.

Rattles, creaks, squeaks, and thuds bug the crap out of me and always have. I've spent many hours over the past 55 years of owning vehicles tearing into dashes, door panels, etc. to find even the tiniest of squeaks. That said our '21 Storm Trooper is one of the quietest vehicles we've ever owned. However... Yesterday my wife had me go for a short drive with her to listen for a very faint chirp that has developed. We'll see how this progresses.

OMG I've done the same for about 55 years also! Maybe we're just "old" and can't remember all of the squeaks and rattles from our 1980 Toyota Corolla  I know that I am at my wits end with tearing into mine trying to find noises.

After viewing your posts over the years with the Ridgeline and now the Passport few are going to the levels you do for perfection and fabrication. Yes, you probably have a higher expectation than the average person but If you can't solve it I don't think anyone can. Life is short, question is what 's out there that would be better than the Passport for you? Sounds like you are so close with the Passport.

The only thing going for it for me with the Passport is the reliability right now.
So far no issues at 30k miles.

Thank you brother. You are one of the few who has sat back and watched me try to perfect my vehicles (or build them into something they shouldn't be) over the years. And you are correct in your observation that I am probably way too picky about stuff :D. To answer your question: it was a very hard choice for me between the PP and a 4runner TRD Pro. In the end, the PP won out because it's just SO comfortable to drive! BUT... the offroad prowess I gave up in the 4runner to have quiet and comfort is nagging at me because of rattles and plastic interior popping I'm now getting in my PP. I am very close indeed... just need to figure these last few noises out! You've been around these forums with me a long time and your advice is appreciated. I should probably just give in and put up with it and enjoy what I can about the PP.

I agree whole-heartedly with your opinion about the reliability!
From the OP, what does ..."expansion joints that have lifted themselves up 2 inches like ledges in this city." mean?

What has lifted up 2 inches?

Fx_Chip got close. I'm talking about the concrete expansion joints in the awful concrete streets here in Lincoln, NE. The winters cause them to move from freezing and thawing. The picture below is what I'm talking about, but one side will be lifted up 2 inches higher than the other. When you drive over them at 35 or 40 mph it beats your car all to heck! Hope that helps. :)

You're probably stuck with the Passport for now whether you want to be or not. I'm guessing a new 4Runner TRD Pro would be at least 9-12 months out or more. We just put money down on a new RAV4 Limited or Limited Hybrid & they told us up to 6 months on the ICE & up to a year on a Hybrid. The popular Toys are really hard to come by right now.

I'm seeing the same thing here. All of the Toyota dealerships near me (well.. three of them within an hour drive) have NOTHING on their lots but used vehicles... and very few of those. Amazing really.

My Passport is quieter than my cheap lol Tesla

I noticed a few rattles from the back left of the cargo area after I drove it off the lot. (I should have test drove it). I put some velcro spacers under the cargo lid hoping that would cure it. It helped a little. My 2020 Passport Elite is now almost three years old and I am living with it. I am not impressed with the build quality of the Honda Alabama plant. My Japanese built 1997 Prelude and 2002 S2000 were much better. Still have the s2k and it is solid as a rock. The Passport might be my last Honda as I see the build quality going down hill and they are using cheaper interior plastics. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Like you, I am not impressed with the interior build quality (or even a lot on the exterior for that matter) of Honda today. I had a 2020 RAM Rebel 1500 truck and it was quiet as a church inside... this was coming from Chrysler! I was hoping for better from Honda. Also like you, this PP and our Odyssey van will probably be our last Hondas. Too bad really because I loved them for 25 years of ownership.

I hope you realize those slabs are FLOATING on a bed of crushed stone on various soils. The moisture in the base materials freeze in the winter. Frozen water takes up about three times the volume of liquid water.
