Hey all! I'm trying to weigh my options on in-car sleeping. I've seen the Luno Life air mattress' and thought I might try to see if anyone has built any of those raised platforms. It's hard to describe so I attached a picture. If anyone has attempted this and can give me any pointers that would be much appreciated! at this point with the price of lumber, it may turn out to be cheaper to buy the $300 air mattress.

I'm looking at an air mattress that is t-shaped and comes with a rechargeable battery pump for about $200. It's a generic fit but suitable for most mid-sized crossover. The platform idea seems cool but you can't break it down and store it in a small space. I need to be able to flip my back seats up and haul around a cooler and other gear. Installing a large wood sleeping table in the back seems like a bad idea.

Well, I want to make it collapsable to the point that it's just a few layers of plywood in the cargo area. it may take a while but I think it's achievable. I'll probably have to get with my dad to design it first with hinges and separable pieces. if I get it done I'll definitely post about it!

Is that queen or twin?
I ended up taking a nap on it last night. That was actually my first time testing it out inside the Passport. It was pumped up to about 70%-80%. A custom fitted (T-shape) mattress would be a better fit inside the Honda, but I purchased the queen-sized Intex Classic Downy airbed for only $25 back in 2019--it's now $65 for some reason. It works for my needs though, and it's easy to fold away.

That's awesome! I'm planning on going camping in it ASAP now that the weather is nice. Worst case if I buy one and later build a custom platform I can use the air mattress on top.

Personally, I don’t have time to build out an in-car camping platform (and I’m not much of a craftsman 😬) but I found a company that sells a really nice option here:

It comes with a whole kitchen set-up, dining area, mattress, storage, everything. It might give you some ideas for your build.

I bought the We&fly mattress from Amazon and it fits the PP perfectly.. no bunching up on the sides. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MYDXD43/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also made a bench to extend the sleeping length to 76 inches that slots into the rear headrest post holes. This avoids having to build a platform and stores easily across and behind the back of the seats (with the rear seats upright). This design also avoids having any legs taking up space in front of the rear seats. The posts are simply 1/2" steel tube from Home Depot welded to a couple of steel cross straps which are then screwed to plywood board. Note the tubes are bent upwards slightly to maintain a level platform with the rear seat backs.
