Just picked up my Passport Elite and am really liking the ride though I immediately installed the Android HondaLink app and was less than impressed.
My previous vehicle was a 2017 Escape Titanium. I'm pretty shocked to discover how lame the Honda app is compared to the respective Ford app. If I were to rate them, I'd give Ford an 8 and Honda a 0.5 (hey it didn't crash... yet... but that's about the only thing it has going for it from what I've seen).
First off, I don't recall experiencing any Ford app bugs (though I'm sure they had some that I didn't encounter). It took me all of 3 seconds to find one in the Honda app-- attempting to manage my subscriptions wouldn't let me save anything since it's impossible to add my phone number (it insists on keeping the underscores-and-dashes default intact and not allowing me to delete it so my entry becomes 123-456-7890default, they don't let you move the cursor to the right to backspace in order to delete the default and even when I was able to cut the default it still wouldn't accept my number).
Though I was finally able to use my first remote command, after attempting to send the command to my Passport it failed after a minute. Not sure if anything in the app works but considering it was recently updated and is version 4.0.6 I feel sorry for anybody that used 1.x, 2.x or 3.x) it's discouraging at best. Each time I launch the app again it spins for a minute on "retrieving status" before it'll even show the remote commands.
As if my first impressions weren't awful it appears that the remote start functionality is absent from the app for the Passport. Any idea why that's the case if the Elite (and perhaps other trims) supports remote start via the FOB? I see that the Odyssey supports remote start among other Honda vehicles so I'm curious if there's a limitation of the vehicle or the app. FWIW, my Escape's remote start only failed once (when it was 4 levels below ground in a parking garage where there was no service). While the remote start isn't a feature I used much from the app, it has come in handy several times.
Disappointingly, the app remote commands require a subscription? I realize there is a trial period but seems ridiculous to charge for functionality that the FOB has and that Ford (among others) gives you for free. I realize some other car manufacturers are also charging subscription fees for some app functionality but am surprised that Honda is among them and for such basic functionality that you can do from the FOB.
