Honda Canada Warranty, denies owner services

My dealer is telling me that any service must be done by a shop. Including oil changes, rear diff fluid change etc.

If I do my self service I can void my warranty.

Strange because the Passports in Canada are the same as the US ones. Even made in the same factory.

Anyone have any insight into this. Sounds totally like a Honda Canada money making scheme.

So theirs a grey area. Technically the dealership is correct. If you choose to do the maintenance yourself keep EVERYTHING as proof incase something were to happen. Keep receipts of the supplies, keep a notebook of what you did on what day with how much/quantity were used. That being said let's say you change your own oil then 1500 miles later your rear main seal starts to leak. Honda can say "well since it wasn't maintained at a certified Honda dealer by a trained Honda technician, it's not covered as it's something we would have noticed before it started to fail" or something to that degree. The only leg you have to stand on is the receipts and proof you did this maintenance on this date at this mileage with brand of whatever and used X amount of said item. Again technically they can still deny you even if you prove you did eeeeeeeeveerything right. That being said its a Honda, if it was a Kia or Hyundai I'd say let the dealership do all the work but the chances, although low, of something happening so bad you need the warranty are in your favor.

....... I've been doing all maintenance on my leased 21 PP and my wifes financed 21 Pilot since day 1 and never had the dealership say anything sooooooooo

Edit: after rereading your post it seems like the dealership is pretty much saying that if you change your oil or rotate your tires your vehicle warranty is void. No. It doesn't work like that.

Same in the U.S. Your warranty is not voided just because you did your own service....but you can void your warranty if you damage something while doing the service yourself. Of course, some dealers may make the issue sound more ominous while telling you how it works just for personal benefit.

Huh?

Why would he go to a different dealership?

I think he is trying to NOT use a Honda dealer to do the work....

Donno about Canadian laws but in the U.S. Honda can’t void warranty just because you did your own service. If something happens during the ownership, Honda need to prove that it’s your service caused issue.
But of course a dealer would tell their customers that if you do your own work, we might not warranty issues. But that’s different from voiding warranty.

Yes, no, maybe. You are generalizing the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in a way that is not totally correct. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act applies only to aftermarket parts that replace OEM parts installed on or offered by a vehicle by the manufacturer. Things like belts, radiators, rotors etc.

It does not cover aftermarket installs that are not OEM equipment or OEM offered options. For example if you install a lift kit and then you have suspension issues, the issues are not covered by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, as Honda does not manufacture or sell a lift kit for the Honda Passport.

As with most things, the devil is in the details.

When the statement is made, it is time to get it in writing. A dealer complaint should be filed with Honda. Honda takes these things seriously. My dealer shop prefers for me to relate any problems to them rather than reporting it in the service survey.

In the US, spoke with Honda today to get clarification; for FACTORY WARRANTY; If the owner performs any maintenance incorrectly, that would VOID the warranty, otherwise the owner is able to perform any maintenance at their own risk. For HONDA CARE, owner needs to keep receipts & accurate logs for any maintenance performed. Hope this helps.

Yes, I am asking my dealer, both the service manager and the sales manager for the particulars, the exact wording. And as well I told the sale manager that it was wrong for him to not identify this at the time of the sale.
