Hello! I truly appreciate the wealth of valuable information that you kind folks have provided, I've learned a lot in the past months.

I had been driving a 1998 Lexus GS300 for the past 15 years and it was finally time for a new car. Something made in this century and something that wouldn't feel like it's falling apart on rougher roads. This will be my second Honda, first being a 1991 Accord EX. I've actually never had the pleasure of owning a new car before.

I was on a waiting list for the Subaru Outback XT but after further research (plus too many JonDZ videos) I realized that the Passport was the correct move and cancelled the Outback order. It was tough since I had all the accessories/modifications picked out for the Outback and had been set on it for quite some time. I generally keep cars for +10 years and I didn't want any regrets not being able to tackle certain roads with the Outback. I was also concerned about the 4 cylinder turbo engine, having to baby the CVT transmission, and their AWD system was not as capable. The Passport was larger (taller/wider) than originally wanted but I have learned to appreciate the extra space.

In early December I made the trek up to Ukiah to pick up the last (supposedly) 2021 Touring AWD in Lunar Silver in California and drove it back down to Los Angeles. It was worth making the trip since the 2022 models were far less attractive feature wise with a higher price tag. It was unfortunate that the Touring trim was dropped in 2022. I also found out from the service department that there is no ability to install a CD player in the 2022 models. Strangely this helped made the decision even easier. Coming from a Production/DJ background having a CD player was important to me at the time. However I was delighted to discover on my drive down that a 128GB USB drive (formatted to FAT32, thanks for the tip!) worked with FLAC files. I have also tested with a 512GB USB drive (formatted to FAT32) with no issues. I think I may just save some money on the CD Player and put the ScanGauge in the open slot instead (another tip I saw on here).

This is the first time I've modified any vehicle, previously I've always kept them stock (except tinting). I was initially running 265/65R18 Wildpeaks with the Traxda 3.5" lift but could not live with the rubbing while turning (mostly near full lock). The shop trimmed/shaved as much as they could from the firewall to accommodate the tire size but there was still a tiny bit of rub afterwards. I decided to drop down a size with 265/60R18 to avoid rubbing although I lost about 1" in tire height. This smaller tire size still requires the wheel well to be trimmed/shaved. If you want to run 265/65R18 with the Traxda 3.5" lift you will have to live with a bit of rubbing after considerable trimming of the firewall or install the axle relocation kit. I highly recommend Central Tire Service 5 if you're in the Los Angeles area and looking to lift your Passport and or upgrade your wheels/tires. Their team is nice, efficient, and does great work (ask for Aldo).

I can't wait to head back out to the Mojave and also explore parts of the Southwest after these past years cooped up. Thank you all for your contributions, I'm honored to have joined such a exclusive club! I love the Passport!

Currently Installed:
Traxda 3.5" Front / 3.0" Rear Lift
Black Rhino Chase 18" (Gun Metal)
Falken Wildpeak 265/60R18
No-Lo Design Skid Plates (Front Skid, Rear Differential, Gas Tank)
Ceramic Window Tinting: Windshield 80%, All Other Windows 45%
Xpel PPF Headlights
Lamin-X Amber Fog Light Covers
LED Interior Lights (Including Glove Box 🤦‍♂️)
LED Backup Lights: 7440 XPR (Diode Dynamics)
MAXLINER All Weather Mats
Photodon Screen Protector

Next Upgrades:
No-Lo Design Catalytic Converter Skid Plate + Mid-Skid Plate (Just released)
VCM Tuner II
Idlestopper
Transmission Cooler (Fingers crossed there's no noise issues)
NavTools (Once released, a rep said in ~6 months). I'm hoping to eventually integrate a Front Camera + Bird's Eye View within Honda's Infotainment system.

If you install the Scan Gauge II you can drill a hole in the back of the center bin and run the OBD cable behind the dash so the cables is not visible. I bought an extra cable for $20 so that I can just unplug the ScanGauge and use it on other cars to check and clear codes, etc.
If you set up the ScanGauge so that one of the four visible gauges indicates when the VCM solenoid is on you will be surprised to find that it very rarely comes on. In my case it only comes on when coasting above 50mph as in coasting down a hill or grade. It may come on more often in Eco mode but I never drive with that on. You may find you will not need the VCM Tuner.

I failed miserably trying to install that led as well. I applaud those that are successful! 👏

Great mods on the PP!

Is there a picture around here of a SGII installed in the center void? My forum search skills have failed me in finding one.

I've got two SGIIs sitting around not currently installed and think that would be a nice project. (and I need to look for the VCM code you have mentioned as well)

Drilled hole in the back of the dash pocket for the Scan Gauge cable. I ran a fish wire through the front then pulled the cable through.

Likely several more members here also have the Scangauge mounted, but these are the first pics I found. Perhaps PM them for additional, closeup pics.

Here is the VCM code for ScanGauge.

Thanks for the tip. That's also good to know about monitoring the VCM through ScanGauge, I will check that out.

Much appreciation!

I was reluctant to pop off the glove box dash trim but it left me no other choice after I foolishly removed the original bulb in a moment of misplaced confidence. I wish I just popped off the dash first to gain proper access instead of wasting time using an endoscope camera and curved pliers to insert the LED from the bottom only. It felt like a game of claw with inverted controls.

ysk, Congrats on your new Touring (and all your upgrades)! I also upgraded my wheels/tires (sans a list kit) but I do love taking it up to the Sierras..

No offense to the Trailsport owners, but the 2019-2021 Touring models seem to have more of the luxury features the Elite have.

The CD player was the main reason, I went with the Touring model and even though you say you can play FLAC files on the stereo - my belief is (and I could be wrong), but the USB post (Aux input) has a reduced frequency response, so even though they may be loss-less - they may not be playing at the full extended frequencies you expect AND with the OEM AMP and Speakers you may not even know what you are missing.

I'm in OC, just past Long Beach, if you want to meet up and hear your USB Stick on a $12k stereo (upgrade), hit me up...

Cheers
Steve

Thank you Steve! I hope to also take it up to the Sierra in the future.

That's an interesting point you bring up as I was wondering about the true frequency response of the audio through the USB port. I may have actually seen a previous post about that in regards to car play (probably yours). Perhaps a spectrum analyzer could be placed somewhere inline to verify the range. Or maybe a primitive ear test with CD vs USB using identical source files. I felt the stereo system in the touring didn't feel wide/open (mostly on the high end) and it seems some of the mid-range gets lost at times (never experienced that in a car audio system before). I'm a huge fan of a flat response from working with studio monitors for the past 20 years. Interestingly I've not upgraded any of my car audio previously. I've always used them as a tool for consumer reference points for mastering/mixdowns. I appreciate the kind offer, sounds like a sweet system. It would be great to check out and see (hear) behind the curtains as that's not too far from where I am. I'm sure you will give me some excellent upgrade (expensive) ideas.

I used a flexible 1/8" fish rod that I already had. But coat hanger might work just as well if you are careful. Push it through from the hole you drilled. Once you get the wire over by the steering column tape the RJ45 connector to the wire and pull through the hole you drilled. That hole may have to be slightly larger than the RJ45 connector.

^^ That's what I'll be trying this week at some point. And a slide over rubber grommet to clean things up. I was looking at OE CD player install videos to get an idea of what it looks like behind the cubby and its tight but looks like a clean shot through to the opening on the driver's side. I can't believe how perfectly the SGII wedges in there.

So nothing back there to worry about when drilling the hole? Did you drill the hole it in the back of cubby, or more on the driver’s side?
