Factory Paint Defect - or - ??

755 Views 17 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  lvdukerider

Purchased 2022 Elite in August. about 6,000 miles. Seldom park unattended in a lot. Washing car today and saw this while running the chamois over everything. I did use power wash for first time a week ago, but unless I had rocks in the water don't think it caused this, but could it possibly have exposed previously unseen air bubbles? On drivers side front fender, just over the flat wheel well portion.
Anyone seen marks like this before? Looks like pitting actually, not a scratch over a 4 x 10 inch or so area.

Curious, did you get that power washer awful close to the paint?

Not that close, and do not remember being any closer there than anywhere else. Even then, I do not think it should have etched the paint like this. It's also a smaller electric washer with a wide tip, not the super concentrated spray.
That looks like the bottom rim of a glass or something that was spilled on there. Anybody drink hydrochloric acid in your family??
Definitely looks like something blasted it. How powerful is your power washer? Looks like the nozzle is very close to it.

If anything, get paint matching Dr Colorchip. It will fill these pits perfectly smooth and you won’t even notice them.

Yikes! Hate to say it, but from my experience new car paint isn't as hardy as it ought to be. My wife's 2016 Accord had paint just flaking off above the rear window. It's too nice a car otherwise to just let go to pot, so we put about $3500 in paint work to get that problem and few other issues taken care of. Funny, there's a Karcher pressure washer ad on the forum page I'm looking at. I would never use a pressure washer to wash a car.

It also looks like someone threw a glass bottle that was soft enough to not cause a dent but the glass chards cut through the paint. I had a similar situation years ago on another vehicle where some drunk idiot threw his beer bottle and hit the hood of my car and created similar damage as you have there.

That explanation makes perfect sense!
It has the flow pattern of sand or water blasting. Your power washer probably found a weak section of the paint, in the same situation I will reduce the nozzle force of the washer going forward because similar "soft" sections may still be on the body.
I always use a pressure washer when washing our pp's with no iissues. It is a 1800 psi so not the strongest. There are tons of yt videos showing the same so doubt it would be from that.
That explanation makes perfect sense!
Now that you mention it, because of its location and angle, it could’ve happened on the road where a bottle was kicked by a car in front of you toward you and hit your fender.
I've seen that same type of damage caused by someone throwing eggs at the vehicle. The egg shell will really do a number on paint.

Did you buy a used Passport that has been repaired as that almost looks like bondo filler.....
That's damage to the paint, after it left the factory. Maybe it happened at the dealership, but it's on the front fender, so you have walked by it before and would have seen it, before the purchase.

Fixing it:
Order some touch up paint from Honda. The counter guy can help you get the correct color.
Order one of these...LINK to apply the paint.

Transfer a couple of drops of the new paint in to the barrel of your new tool.
Touch the tip to your hand, until paint dabs out.
Dab paint into each nick. Do not put too much paint in to the nick, because that will cause the new paint to "crown" above the highest part of the nick.
Go back the next day and apply more paint.

There's a pattern to it....wonder if an air ratchet or gun was bounced off the fender while the trigger was engaged. Any recent visits to a shop?

File a claim with your insurance so it's fixed properly.

I'll second the suggestions on the Dr Colorchip kit and the paint pen.
The kit works great for a area with multiple smaller chips over a larger area and the pen works well on larger chips with the Dr Colorchip paint which seems to blend better than the "factory" touch up paint. Just in my personal experience.
From your photo it looks like a peice of cloth or cardboard that was run over multiple times and had abrasives, (small rocks, dirt, sand), struck your fender at speed, you probably never noticed it happen. Either that or a automated car wash after a really muddy vehicle went through right before you and mud/dirt was still stuck to the rotating brush but you never mentioned using a automated car wash so I'm guessing the former.
