Exit the car, leaving it running?

Hi,

I'll soon get a new 2023 Passport and can't find anything about this in the user manual so I guess it's not possible but I wanted confirmation.

In our Subaru Impreza, the remote starter can also be used to tell the car to keep running even if we exit and lock the doors. I live in Canada so we use this from time to time when going quickly in the corner store while there is a storm, etc.

I'm wondering if it can be done with the Passport.

Thanks!

Remote start works from the key fob and runs for 10 minutes then shuts off. I don't know if it's on every trim level, I have the 2022 Passport Trailsport which does have it and I'm sure the Elite has it. There may be an option for remote start from a phone app which might work from a greater distance but I haven't bothered to find out about that. For me the fob method is excellent though maybe 15 minutes runtime would be better, especially in colder climates. I'd suggest having the heated steering wheel fitted seeing that you're in Canada, or if you have the Elite trim level I think comes with it already. Heated seats and steering wheel also turn on automatically with remote start too. Unlike my 60k Defender smh, which was absurd, let's pay extra for warming features that don't even turn on when trying to warm the car up in 10 degree weather. They didn't even have remote start from the fob, only by phone app, it was so pathetic for that kind of money. I like JLR don't get me wrong, on styling they have some really nice vehicles there but ugh they do some really dumb stuff too. Honda does it right in so many ways.

The Passport does not have the "Keep Engine Running" feature but the remote starter can be used to start the car if within range and the car will turn on its heater or the airconditioning as needed.

Even the 10 minute run time is illegal and subject to a fine here in NYC. And if you are wondering about how the catch you? They pay average citizens to record and turn you in. 😡

Thanks everyone!

@Chief65 While we were supposed to be getting the Sport trim, we ended up going with the TrailSport which, here in Canada, has both remote start and heated steering, all our models do in fact!

@fx_chip Thanks, it seems like a good workaround.

That's terrible. I'm surprised it's not illegal to own your own car down there yet. :) One big reason (the biggest tbh) I left Audi behind is they don't equip with a remote start option. Evidently it's illegal in Germany, why that matters in North America I don't know, especially when VWs can have it here and VW owns Audi, go figure. That kind of thing hurts my head. I'm going to guess VW works around it by assembling in Mexico. <shrug> Good choice on the Trailsport maxime :)

The remote start is amazing, I use it a lot to cool the car. It's pretty smart too and works better than the Highlander's method. What I mean is the Passport still needs the fob when you arrive at the vehicle to start it to drive off. My wife's 2023 Highlander shuts off once you open the door and you have to restart it again to go. I load my kids up and whatever else and having the AC blowing without having to go into the driver's seat to start the car up again is nice.

For me the fob method is excellent though maybe 15 minutes runtime would be better, especially in colder climates.
I read for the Passport you can extend the 10min by doing the same combination of lock and remote start on the fob to add another 10 min = 20 min. The car should blink again to confirm the time extension, but I haven't tested if it really does run for 20 min.

edit*
instructions below, however it seems like it doesn't really "add 10 minutes" but actually resets back to the 10 min timer. So it can be 20 min if you wait until the last minute to reset the remote start. Shrug better than nothing I guess.

"You can extend the vehicle running time by another 10 minutes by pushing the lock and start button again. You can confirm the time extension by looking at the vehicle indicators, which will flash another 6 times. If you need to turn off your vehicle, you can do so by holding down the start button for 1 second"

I notice that the heated seats don't come on until I get in the car and press the start/brake after using the remote start now.

They originally came on when I started the car. I've never played with any settings. And this is happening exactly when it's hitting below zero morning temps!
I think the seats and heated steering wheel (if you have one) actually come on with the auto start if it is cold enough, but the lights do not illuminate until you actually start the PP. It seems to be that way in my 2021 Elite.

Some cars allows you to lock and unlock the car while engine is running. I don’t know if Passport does that. Worse comes to worse you can always just use the physical key to lock the door.

They come on just not indicated by the heated seats button.

Good info, thank you!

I thought this was funny, but I took my brothers 2022 Ford pickup to the store. I locked it and when I came out it was running. It’s a loud diesel so I don’t know how I did that. It did allow me to lock it and it stayed running. This truck is new I’m glad it wasn’t stolen.

Ford allows that. I can do the same with my Mustang GT too.

Probably not nearly as glad as your brother.
