I recently bought a 2021 Passport EX-L AWD, which to my knowledge does NOT have the hands-free lift gate kick sensor. And I purchased the 5000lb tow package (with the transmission cooler, etc.) as a dealer-installed accessory.

The service/parts person says he cannot get the kick sensor relocation kit part of the tow kit, and therefore cannot install the tow kit…and I do see from other discussions in the forums that the sensor relocation piece is in low supply.

But why do I need this part if I don’t have the hands-free kick sensor (according to the trim info for the EX-L)?
Not sure if I am misunderstanding the issue, or if this is a service/parts guy who cannot read his own documents.

Can anyone shed so light on this for me?

isn't that kick relocation part separate and an additional cost? Just buy the tow hitch, it comes with the rear valence. That should be it. EX-L doesn't have kick sensor as you already know. You shouldn't be paying for anything else. Try a different guy? I could be missing something as well, but I've looked at buying the OEM hitch and that is not a necessary part on the purchases.

My dealer tried to tell me the same thing when trying to get the hitch installed on my 2021 EX-L and wanted to charge me for the relocation kit. I installed the OEM hitch and wiring myself with no relocation kit and there is definitely no need as there is no sensor back there.

Thanks for the responses!

My update: In short, part not needed, tow pieces were installed.

I brought the car in to have a few other accessories installed that were not in-stock when I took delivery, and was insistent that there was no need for the kick sensor in my model. The service guy went back to the car, tried to activate the liftgate with his foot unsuccesfully, spent a minute looking under the car, and agreed with me. He said his system showed I should need the part, but clearly it did not by his own check. The rest of the tow pieces were in-stock as he had said, he added them to the install, and it was all done on time as promised.

Seems like this was an honest error, and to the service department’s credit it was quickly handled when evidence was clear…but I will keep my eyes open, as always.
