If you were able to DIY the
differential fluid, you should be able to DIY the transfer case fluid. The
transmission fluid change is a separate service that should be done about the same time. You will use less than 0.5 quarts of fluid for the transfer case.
Supplies:
- 1 quart - Honda 08200-9014 Hypoid Gear Oil Hgo-1 Gl-5 75W-85 (current price with shipping between $25 to $30... Amazon, dealership, online seller)
- 2 pieces - 20mm crush washer P/N 94109-20000 (same as one for the differential)
Tools:
- 3/8" breaker bar
- 3/8" torque wrench - set at 44Nm
- 3/8" short extension, as needed
- fluid pump for quart bottle or nozzle
- small bucket or oil pan... and large scrap cardboard to catch the splatter
- floor jack & jack stands... may not be necessary, but helps with clearance for the breaker bar and torque wrench
Procedure:
- drive the car to warm up the transfer case
- locate the transfer case - 1st photo (from the front), adjacent to the exhaust pipe
- locate the fill plug - 2nd photo, front side of the transfer case
- locate the drain plug - 2nd photo, bottom of the transfer case
- if necessary, use the front center jack point (photo 3) to raise the vehicle and place jack stands on left front and right front jack points
- in the following order: 1) loosen the side fill plug, 2) loosen the bottom drain plug
- remove bottom drain plug and drain fluid into the oil pan
- remove floor jack and jack stands to completely drain fluids... that is, level the car
- replace bottom drain plug with a new crush washer and torque to 44Nm
- fill transfer case with new fluids until it overflows... approximately 0.45 quarts
- replace side fill drain plug with a new crush washer and torque to 44Nm (raise vehicle for clearance to complete torque, if necessary)
