Is there a limit as to the extent the crossbar can move forward? It seems there may be some blocking device in the rail itself at least a foot from the front.

Following...was looking at the same thing yesterday. Looks like there is a small screw type piece that can be removed with an alan wrench but i have not yet tried.

it might be a limiter to ensure nothing is above the moon roof.......not sure

Yes, there is a small screw limiter. I had to remove the screw to install crossbars I bought. Not sure why it's there, but I also found moving the front crossbar too far forward caused air turbulence that was quite loud at speed, so I moved it back.

Nope, the instructions sucked. But getting up on a stool for installing I could see it and figured it out.
