Has anyone installed a safe / vault in their center console? I'm looking for the ability to secure valuable items but have quick access to them if needed.

Here are a couple of examples from LOCK'ER DOWN:

Console Vault, which is another manufacture I've heard of, doesn't make one for the Passport.

Any other options out there? Anyone have experiences they can share around this.

It is my belief that keypad lock system will require 10 - 15 seconds to react and then open.

That's OK if you're away from trouble and wish to be prepared BUT if a thug suddenly crashes a beer bottle on your window (my experience around 2006?) - wanting trouble - it'll take too long to access. (I flashed my Kahr PM9 and he ran hollering gun to the others).

When seated/ driving I often place my carry handgun (in a thin holster - covering the trigger) on the console - for quicker access than my IWB holster would allow.

If I need to leave it behind I lock it in a gunbox that is tethered within the car (under drivers seat).

I like the safe idea, but agree that a combo is a horrible idea, should be a one fingerprint open design.

Since I have a $30 lock box (similar to the above photo). I'll stick with that.

Also, haven't had the need to have a gun at-the-ready in my travels, but do have a small canister of pepper spray in the center console, should an uninvited guest approach too close to my window...

I've run in to problems using fingerprints, you have to be consistent with placement, finger needs to be clean / injury free; not reliable enough in an urgency / emergency vs. simply sitting on the console.

For everyday storage (where there's no urgency) fingerprints are more convenient than keys / combinations.

I purchased this nearly 2 years ago, a disappointment. The fingerprint may/ may not register and over time (with normal dust collection) the touch keys get gritty and stick. I've never carried the remote fob so won't judge it; but the physical keys work 100%.

While this thing is physically strong it is also heavy, I believe 16 pounds.

From my understanding ... gun carry in Orange County will get you in Big Trouble.

Thanks guys, unfortunately my work takes me to a lot of places where carry is statutorily prohibited.

My thinking is that once getting back to my Passport I could slide open the console cover, enter the combo and then either actually open up the safe or just leave it closed but unlocked. This would provide quick access if needed. Once reaching my next destination I could simply close and spin the lock to secure the safe again.

Getting in and out of an under seat lockbox just doesn't seem practical or discreet. It would be obvious to anyone watching that I've got something secured under the seat.

I'm not a fan of the digital lock either, the standard lock on all of these is a 3 or 4 digit rotating lock.

I too am not convinced that a console mounted combo lock box is your best solution, but then we all have differences of opinions.
Unless someone has specifically targeted you for close observation ordinary folk won't notice you discretely using an under seat lock box.

And using a tethered box allows use of the console storage box.

Send pics of your final installation.

I installed the LOCK'ER DOWN Extreme combination console vault in my Passport in 20 minutes. I use it to secure my firearm when I am unable to carry it. Otherwise it is on my hip. I bought it for security; not for quick access. It is easier to secure the firearm instead of thrashing around with the lock box under a seat. Lock box goes into the hotel with me if needed. The black combination lock is easier to see than the chrome which reflects all kinds of light and difficult to see the numbers. There is still room for the sliding coin tray and a pair of gloves on top of the safe and still close the console cover. The only noticiable attention I got was when I asked my hubby where the socket set was ;)

Can you please post pictures (of the safe only)?

Thanks
