My Collision Mitigation Braking System activates when there is no reason for it to do so. I took it to my dealer and they said it is because there is dirt on the radar behind the car logo on the grille so they cleaned it. In my opinion it was not dirty. When I drove home from the dealership the system flashed BREAK again and shook the steering wheel.

I know I can turn this “feature” off by pressing a button on the dash board but I have to do that every time I start the car - it malfunctions regularly. In addition to be inconvenient it is distracting and dangerous do deal with when driving. If I loan my car to someone It is embarrassing and difficult to explain to them how to deactivate it.

I wrote to Honda for advise and they, of course said to contact the dealer. I took it in again and they said unless they can replicate the problem in their shop they can't analyze it. I also took it to an independent auto electric shop and they said the same thing.

Honda has to be aware of this problem but so far no one has offered a solution and the dealership acts like they never hear of such a thing. If I could permanently disconnect it I would.

Any suggestions?

Other than switching it off entirely, have you tried changing the CMBS activation distance to "Short" in the vehicle settings? If it's set to short it will only pick up vehicles and objects that you get really close to.

You can access the settings via the infotainment system: Home➡Settings➡Vehicle➡ Driver Assist System Setup➡Forward Collision Warning Distance.

Hi - thanks for the suggestion but I have already switched to the short setting and it only improved slightly.

I suggest complaining formally to the NHTSA if you are in the USA, as a safety defect. Your car is not malfunctioning, this system just sucks on the Passport and is a safety risk in the opinion of many. Honda is unlikely to do a thing unless they are forced by enough formal complaints or bad press.

About the best you can do to 'fix' the system is to reduce the sensitivity in the menu settings using your navigation screen as others have suggested. This should lower the frequency of false activations but not eliminate them entirely. The sensors are just way too sensitive, and that has nothing to do with dirt or calibration, it is like this on every Passport. Those who rarely drive in conditions that trigger the system may think there is no problem (mostly straight roads, rural, etc). The brake application is also extreme when CMBS activates. I disable the system whenever I am on winding roads or in dense traffic or urban areas to avoid false activations and the car slamming on the brakes for no good reason.

The CMBS when on will trigger on roundabouts, bushes, signs, opposite direction vehicles on a right hand curve, etc. It is the one thing on this vehicle that completely sucks.

Thanks - I did reduce the sensitivity or triggering distance some time ago and it helped a little but the thing goes off for randomly for no good reason. I like your idea about complaining to the NHTSA and will give it a try. When I wrote the mothership Honda Corp they were of no help and just suggested I contact the dealer.
