Cargo area when rear seats folded

I took my measuring tape to the dealer because I care how long and wide the cargo area is. I do a fair amount of car camping and would like an air mattress to fit. My '02 4Runner it

was a bit cramped on the width, but the lenght was fine. Attached are some pictures of the measurements in case others care about these dimensions. I didn't measure the height because it is plenty for my purpose. The measurement over the headrests is starts back at the closed rear hatch. A 6' long matress is an easy fit. There are two width measurements because I was trying out the iPhone measuring tool which was surprisingly accurate. I also took a diagonal measurement.

Cool, I'm planning on camping with mine as well and sleeping in it when I solo camp. Although I thinking of getting a 4" thick piece of foam, instead of using my Thermorest Neo Dream Air mattress

I also went to the dealer with my tape measure for similar reasons. I took the following measurements:

  • back hatch to front seat (76 inches when front seat is all the way back)
  • back hatch to front seat with the seat all the way forward (87 inches)
  • width of 60/40 back seats (drivers side = 28 inches to start of wheel well; passenger side = 18 inches to wheel well) = 46 inches total

So there is room for a 28 inch wide pad or cot with just the '60' 2nd row seat folded down and plenty of length.

I also measured the height of the back window above the cargo area floor (to see where a 15 inch high cot ends up) = 16 inches to cargo cover attachment point, which is below the window.

FYI, the reason I am considering using a cot is to preserve storage space underneath without building any type of platform. I will usually have the cot with me anyway to use inside my tent so for stops/stays of 2 nights or longer, I will probably set up my tent, etc. For a 1 night stop, I would sleep in the car (or when arriving someplace in inclement weather, even if I plan to stay longer.)

Oh, I forgot to say, I lowered both seats and climbed in the back and the salesperson closed the back door and I laid down with my head behind the passenger seat and my feet extended out over to the driver side (sort of a cross pattern) and I fit fine, I'm 5'10" and I would estimate someone up to approx. 6'2" would stlll fit fine (maybe even taller)...

Great info!

Wondering if any owners could give one more dimension. What is the tallest item that could be loaded? I sometimes help transport rescue dogs and often use dog crates if transporting more than one dog at time.

Also, can the rear glass on the tailgate open separately?

The distance from the cargo area floor to the lowest point of the tailgate opening is 32 inches.

The rear glass cannot be opened.

Looking at a Passport and did cargo area measurements to see what would load and options for building a platform to sleep on.

Two additional measurements that people may be interested in-

1) Largest diagonal measurement for rear hatch (if wanted to load wide boards)- 54". Thus could load a 4x8 sheet of plywood but would be to long to close the hatch.

2) Distance between wheel bumps at 12" from floor of cargo area (if built a 12" high sleeping platform)- 52". Thus could fit a 52" wide mattress on the elevated platform- just about full size width for two.

The Passport could therefore be a good candidate for a campervan type conversion is good off-road capability.

Has anyone tried fitting a twin size mattress in the back of their PP with the rear seats down? It seems like it would be a perfect fit and still have a little space around the edges.

There was a few posts on here recently where some people built bed frames and etc. using plywood and things... and installed a queen mattress or maybe twin cant remember. 🤷‍♂️
