Another question: I just purchased a new 2022 Trailsport… and am wanting to take a road trip which would put about 800 highway miles on the new engine. Does anyone recommend against this and recommend breaking in the engine first before this kind of trip? I’m reading mixed reviews. Thanks!

No problem whatsoever doing this. About the only break in suggestion I have seen over the past decade is to not rev the engine above 4000 rpm during the first 1000 miles unless necessary. Otherwise I think a nice long trip like that would be a good thing for a new vehicle to get broken in.

The 2022 Owners Manual (you can download it for free) also states on page 382 -
Break-in Period: Avoid towing a trailer during your vehicle's first 600 miles (1,000km)

When I bought my Passport in SoCal., with 13 miles, I had to be back in San Jose area two days later. I was told to not run the engine at 70mph or whatever it was for a straight 400 miles and to let it break in at various speeds. So I would bump the speed from 55-70. It was kind of annoying, ticked off many behind me when going slower, and I’ll never do that again.

A road trip is the best way to break in a new engine. My only advice after nearly 54 years of car ownership would be to vary your speed. Leave the CC off for at least the first 500 miles. It's always best on a fresh engine to vary the RPM some. Don't be afraid to blow the cobs out occasionally for short bursts. You're not going to break it. The worst way to break in a new engine in, is city driving for the first 500 miles...

I’ve purchased many new cars right before road trips, and have never had issues. I wouldn’t gun the engine at every stop light or anything, but don’t feel you have to baby it either. Modern vehicles just don’t need the break-in of old ones.

Most manuals advise about varying speed and not towing for the first 500 miles or so but living in BFE no where near a lot of dealerships and the ones near by have limited selection and don't deal so I've road tripped some vehicles (as have friends and family) and haven't had any issues. My Passport I got 70 miles away but my Gladiator I bought and put 700 miles on driving home (saved me about $6k if you're curious).
