Bluetooth access to Google Assistant

Is it possible to access Google Assistant via bluetooth (w/o being connected to Android Auto)?

When I long-press the talk button to access Google on my phone, a message pops up saying something about the function doesn't work because my phone is not iOS. Do you know how to get this to work on my Android (Galaxy S9)? I think it works if it's plugged in, using Android Auto. But, it should work through bluetooth. It apparently will work with an iPhone... And, I've gotten it to work using this method in other vehicles.

Not that I'm aware of. But if your phone is plugged in you can just say "Okay Google" without having to press any buttons.
No it doesn't work with the iPhone. For Apple connect the phone must be plugged in, other wise all you have is phone and bluetooth music streaming functions via bluetooth.
The OP was asking about an Android phone.
Yes but the OP also stated: "It apparently will work with an iPhone... And, I've gotten it to work using this method in other vehicles."

Just letting the OP know that his information on the iPhone and Honda is incorrect.

Ah, OK. I missed that point.

So, what function is the pop-up referring to that only works with iOS?

Is there another way to voice text with an Android w/o being plugged in. Really hate the idea of the hassle of always getting my phone out and plugging in even for short trips.
Not real sure what this is. Says for Android based systems and Android Auto but then says it's for iPhone devices. What exactly does this do?

I checked their site and when you pick the model for factory radios, Hondas up to the current model year are supported. The confusion lies in the fact that the infotainment system runs on Android, and the CPlay2Air wireless adapter supports iOS. So it’s really used for making Apple CarPlay wireless, not for Android phones.

When you long-press the talk button on your steering wheel your phone must be plugged-in to your vehicle in order for the Android Google Assistant to work thru the vehicle microphone and speaker system. Google Assistant will not work thru bluetooth, I'm assuming the software is not programmed to work with it, maybe in the future.

However, you can set up Google Assistant to work at any time, even when it's not plugged into your vehicle, and even when the phone's screen is locked. It won't work thru your vehicles microphone and speaker system, so you must turn down your music first.

I have a GS9 and it can be a little finicky sometimes, and I'm not sure if it's just not recognizing my voice or if it doesn't want to unlock the phone. So you can also try using "Smart Lock" to keep your phone unlocked when you are in places like your home, or when connected to the bluetooth of your vehicle.

I can get it to partially work when plugged in. I'll long press the talk button, Google Assistant starts, I say "text so-and-so", it confirms and asks what the message will be, I speak the message, it confirms the message and asks if I want to send. Immediately after that, I get a different voice saying the internet connections is not sufficient. It does this every time, no matter where in the car the phone is. So, again Android Auto in the Passport is useless for voice texting....

When I've accessed the Google Assistant w/o being plugged in, I don't get any voice feedback from the phone because it's bluetooth is connected to the car. Also, pretty useless.

I've been able to do this in other cars with Android Auto. So, it's a Honda thing. Sure hope they fix it. One of he primary reasons I went with an EX-L over the Sport was having Android Auto.

So, on my my.honda.com page, I found this. It clearly says I should be able to access google via bluetooth with an Android. So, again, when I do exactly what it says to do, it won't let me because my 'device is not an iOS device.'

I have a complaint in at the dealer where I bought the car. Anyone know how to efficiently raise this issue with Honda Corp.?

May not be the way you want it, but this is from Honda. I know with my iPhone I have to have it hard wire connected for all but basic phone apps. Bluetooth is for phone and music only.

Yeah, done all that. Even uninstalled and reinstalled Android Auto, unpaired an re-paired my phone.
One last probably silly question. You do have Honda link app installed on your phone. Not sure that it matters but if you don't you might try that.

The manual could be wrong. I mean seriously Honda has a recall out for some of the 2020 Passports, mine was one of them, because they stuck the wrong safety sticker on the door.

Did not have HondaLink. I'll see if that helps. Thanks.
[I will be away from my car for a few days. I'll report if that works then.]
Owners of 2019 and 2020 Pilots are not able to have this device work properly. Even though the website says it does work it doesn't because the 2019/2020 radios are a different Android build version than the earlier 2018 and older models. Post 57 of this linked thread mentions the problem.

Carplay2air Not working in 2019/2020
So, it sounds like it's an issue for '19 and '20 Passports and Pilots. This was a feature I was specifically wanting. I'm going to look into returning the car.

Keep in mind that the issue ls973800 mentioned was for the Carplay2air adapter.
