Hey everyone,

Hope you're all doing great. I was wondering is it best to always shut off the engine stop and idle function? I have no preference either way, I just thought it would be better for the engine, to not being shut off and starting again, with it getting super cold out where I am, don't want any issues, not that any would come up, I don't drive very much working from home. Can't make any changes to the system to shut it off permanently as it's a lease.

Thanks!

I shut it off at every start... From what I understand, if it is cold out and you have the heater on the start/stop will not turn the engine off. The manual will have more details.

Early on, I discovered an excellent tool for preventing the Auto-Shut off Function to operate, it has gotten to the point, where I pretty much automatically use it, before putting my Passport into D or R:

I installed the idle stopper gizmo (around $70 ?) and dont have to worry anymore. Yes.. I was concerned about engine wear and questioned "fuel savings" due to this feature. I also noticed that friend's Mercedes was much "smoother" when doing the idle off/on sequence.

Op, does not matter one way or another to use or not use. It’s preference only. The engine has baffles throughout the block to keep oil “precharged” for a quick stop and go
Most people do not like it as they don’t have cognitive motor skills to control it with the pressure on the brake pedal. For us old guys that grew up with stick shift it’s easy. Once learned I for one like auto start stop as I control it second nature without a need to think about it and mainly use it at long lights, freight trains is stopping to talk with a neighbor

The "starter" will engage a certain number of times in its life.
Each time the "auto stop" feature engages, the starter's life is reduced.
At first I used the button and eventually got a device to disable the "auto stop" feature.

I've been a bit concerned about the idle/shutoff too. After a few days of driving my new Passport, I noticed a tip displayed in the DII to let me know I could depress the brake pedal all the way, stop the engine while at a stoplight, drive-through, etc. (don't recall the exact wording of the message). From what I can tell, if I don't depress the brake all the way, the engine continues to run, if I press it just a little harder, then the engine turns off and the green Auto Stop icon appears in the DII until I release the brake (or the AC causes it to turn back on). I can't find anything about this in the owner's manual. Has anyone seen this message or experienced this?

The Owner's Manual does mention the battery is designed to support AutoStop, and if you replace the battery to be sure to use one rated for Auto Stop. There's also a list of other situations where AutoStop won't engage, including cold temps, high temps, etc.

That reminder is completely normal

Many if not most manufacturers have such a feature and design components to last longer when cycling for idle stop. You paid for those more robust components and using the idle stop will not damage the battery or starter earlier than conventional components of years past. A lot of people are going to tell you the feature damages the starter and battery and that claim is baseless.

[rant]
Despite that, I personally shut the idle stop "feature" off every time I start the car because it is annoying and causes delay, and is just quite ineffective and pathetic in concept. It is a useless feature to help scrape out tenuous MPG claims. I'm all for saving the environment using intelligent methods, but quite tired of the baseless marketing and silly expenditures in many industries that isn't really helping. Much like 'organic' has the weakest, most baseless requirements for food labeling, much of automotive 'green' tech is BS made for the gullible. Idle stop saves the tiniest unnoticeable sliver of fuel and emissions even in city traffic. Incredibly, Honda used to put an "Earth Dreams" label on this combustion engine- people will believe anything to stoke their emotions. If we want to save the planet, how about putting emissions control on leaf blowers, that literally emit more than several dozen to several hundred times more pollution than any car and are noisy and useless as well?
[/rant]

Sorry for the added rant, I cannot help but get miffed about the fact that such a feature is forced on us and doesn't save any significant fuel, at least not un all my testing.

This message is totally normal and is mentioned in the manual. I don't know the page.

Just purchased my pp about 6 weeks ago and went on a 2 hour trip. I want to test the econ vs not using it. Return trip got about 1 mpg better not using econ so not sure what exactly that gadget is for.

When econ is activated the transmission doesn't shift into a lower gear as readily so I think the engine needs more throttle to go up slight inclines that it would without econ and therefor uses a bit more gas. That's kind of been my observation, but it's just a guess.

REMINDER: This thread is for the Button to turn on/off the Auto Engine Cut Off, I'm sure their are threads on the ECO button, which has nothing to do with the topic herein..
