Auto Stop: Malfunction or Blessing?

15891 Views 63 Replies 30 Participants Last post by  P-A-N-D-A
I must say, I have had zero problems with my Passport in the 5 months and 2,800 miles in driving it.

However about 3 months ago the Auto Engine-Off feature just went away, I did not miss it one bit, I never turned it off (any more) and my engine never went of when at a stop light and I was just fine with it.

Well strangely enough, today it started working again (no I did not yet do the software upgrade), it just started doing what it was supposed to be doing all along. Yeah, I still hate it and started turning it off again, while driving, but it left me wondering:

Why it has not been working at all the last 3 months or so?

Is there something wrong? Do I need to take it in or mention it to the dealer next time I am in? Or does it "learn" that if someone is constantly turning it off, it learns and does not engage?

Anyone else have a similar issue? or thoughts?

cheers...

I personally am concerned if ANYTHING happens or does not happen the way it is supposed to on a vehicle that I can drive at a high speed.
Definitely tell the dealer. We are still all in the warranty phase, so I expect the warranty to cover anything not working whether I use the feature or not.
LOL, I know, but since it is working again, what do you think the dealer is going to say?
We are not able to reproduce the event sir...

Perhaps a loose wire...Maybe can cause sparking..You never know..Why take the chance?..It is free.
If you have the thermostat set to low or you're in Sport mode, the auto stop doesn't go into effect when idle
My auto stop is a 50/50 feature as well.

Sometimes it is an instant auto idle shut off, sometimes I can drive for hours in stop and go traffic and it never shuts off.

I rarely use the AC, so it’s not that and never use the sport mode.

I’d like to think my Elite hears me curse at it when the auto stop turns on!

By the way it is back NOT working (not that there's anything wrong with that....)

Just press the button (by the shifter) when you start the engine and the engine will not stop. At least that is my understanding how it is supposed to work.

Yeah - We get that.

However, the fact that none of us like the feature that seems to work 50% of the time is the discussion...

What I discovered was that if your climate control is on ac/heat the car will not shut off.
On my EX-L AWD if the AC is set to Lo for the rear and not the front it will shut off. If the AC is set to Lo for the passenger front it will not shut off. Lo as in temperature. I just disable the auto start right after I start the engine.

What did your dealer say when you discussed it with him?
When I first got my passport, the auto stop worked great. Then, after a few days I kept getting the message it was disabled at every stop.
I read and re-read every page in the owners manual related to this problem and thought I had eliminated all the obstacles and still no auto stop.
My wife "suggested" it was "something I did" as I was changing settings for many things. I sat in the car one day and went through all the settings,
not changing anything, just looking and saving. The next thing I did was what I believe fixed it: with power off, I pushed EVERY button, moved EVERY switch
and then tried it..... it has worked fine ever since!!!!!!

Here's what I have learned about it. It depends on how much pedal pressure you apply to the brake.when you stop. If you can keep the pressure light, it will not activate the Auto/Stop. If it is a hot day and you are stopped a long light but have the A/C on it will Auto start when the temp in the interior rises above a certain point. If your Auto/Start continunes to work/not work, it may be a wiring problem to your auto Start/Stop button on the console.
Brake pressure is not related to Auto stop. Completely stopping is. Perhaps a coincidence that the auto stop did not work.
disregard there is a message on the dash that says that. I guess I’ve never braked that softly.

Here is the plethora of conditions that prevent the AIS system from activating normally:
