5000# Trailer Hitch

7468 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Sparky
Just bought my passport in the last month and this hitch which i am still waiting for Honda Canada to forward to the dealer to install. At this time all I can find out is that the parts are back-ordered and there is no solid timeline on when they might be available.

Another question that Honda Canada is unable to answer is for any information with installing a a controller for trailer brakes. There is no OEM controller available and they are discouraging installing an aftermarket one as it "may" interfere with the Canbus electrical system...In fact though this optional hitch package ($2500+ installed bought with the vehicle) come with both 4 and 7 pin setups they discourage making use of the 7 pin (needed for trailer brakes) as it can/may cause all sorts of faults though they wont say which faults.

Has anyone in this forum installed the this hitch with the trailer brake controller? What were your experiences getting it installed? Experiences towing with this set up? How about anyone with this hitch set up on a pilot?

Many thanks for any responses.

I tow close to 5k regularly. I use the 7pin, however I do not have a trailer brake control module. To be fair the passport does a pretty good job at stopping this weight on flat surfaces here in Florida. Hitch and wiring was $400 and change and I installed it myself. I don't remember how much the trans cooler was. But I'm glad I didn't spend the $2000+ as it was all pretty simple install. Not sure why the trailer brake control module would interfere with any electronics, as they are installed on many vehicles no problem.

I had the Honda dealer in Fargo put in an aftermarket brake controller in my car. Works well, without issue. Pulling a small travel trailer @ 3600 lb. GW

Towing a camper of certain weight without trailer brakes working is against the law in many states. How much is a brake job on a Passport? Sure it will stop it but good luck in an emergency panic stop. You can get an underdash prodigy controller and easy to DIY for ~$100. Better yet, a Curt bluetooth one that has no wires and just plugs into 7 pin receiver for a little over $200. I urge you to get your trailer brakes working. Like face masks, for the safety of the rest of us.
