Hello all. I am new to the forum and have been doing some reading of the various towing posts. I have a 2022 Trailsport and I am looking to purchase a RV (travel trailer) that is no bigger than 4500 GVWR. We are looking to the use the camper at normal RV campgrounds, not doing anything too off the grid or any place that would be too difficult to get to, high elevations, etc.

I know there are some other similar threads, but I figured I would run a few things by everyone since there isn't as much regarding 2022 and towing. I have the factory installed hitch and am planning to have the ATF cooler installed. Additionally, I am going to install the Tekonsha Primus IQ controller and Tekonsha 118291 wiring harness. I saw some posts saying that in order to best reduce sagging, that suspension enhancement should be considered. Does everyone agree? Has anyone tried installing the Supersprings CSS-1125 on a passport trailsport? Are there any other suggestions for cost effective solutions for preventing sagging?

Is there anything else I am missing for comfortable and safe towing? I saw some posts suggesting a transmission temp monitor, is that really necessary to have continuous monitoring? I do have an OBD reader if I needed to check conditions.

I really appreciate all of your help and welcome any feedback or suggestions.

There is a difference between cabin load capacity (Passport = 940 lbs) and tow capacity (Passport = 5,000 pounds).

To get the cabin load capacity you add up all passengers, the stuff they load in to the cabin, plus the downward weight that the trailer puts on your receiver's ball. It is not supposed to exceed 940 pounds.

As for towing capacity, the loaded trailer should not exceed 4,300 pounds This is after you fill the trailer up with camping supplies and have installed the optional cooler and tow package. Yes, the rating is 5,000 pounds, but there is a 10% rule of thumb that has to be subtracted from that 5,000 rating = 4,500 pounds.

If you buy a camper trailer that has a dry weight of 3,300 pounds you will be right on the edge of your Passport's limits, after you load it up.

I don't want to depress people here with my install price because I had access to wholesale dealer parts (through my brothers CA repair shop wholesale license) for the complete dealer installed hitch, trans cooler and moved kick sensor. I then used a dealer provided 15% off coupon for labor on any service.

I was out the door for roughly $1,600 compared to the original retail dealer quote of $2,173.00.

YMMV

P.s. to OP

That is far too much trailer. Best to try and not pull more than 3,750# with a weight distribution hitch. You can not mitigate the power train damage your PP will suffer in time with that whale on its back.

You could save even more if you invest 2-3 hours installing the hitch, kick sensor (if Elite) and wire harnes yourself and just have the dealer install the trans cooler. Installing the the hitch, sensor and harness is pretty simple especially following the accessory instructions from Honda.

Is this from Honda dealership? I think I paid about the same amount from where I purchased the car.

If I had a garage ...
Doing it at the curve is not fun.
No friends or family that have a garage or covered space? Throw some beers in the mix and you can even get a helping hand. ;)
