I might be going on a 500 mile trip right now. Is it safe to drive with the "A" warning in maintenance, or should I change the oil first? I looked at the manual, and it said A = "replace engine oil," but 4k miles and 50% oil still seems okay, right?

50% will give you another 4k miles till 0%. It's recommended to change oil when it's below 15% so that will put you at roughly 7.5k miles or 3.5k miles to go.
The A will always display telling you what kind of service is coming up.
