2019 passort elite w excess carbon issues?

Hi... I'm new here. I have a 2019 passport elite... I've been losing power and losing gas mileage. The dealership says I need a "fuel system cleaning" $386 to get all the excess carbon causing these issues and a transmission fluid change $411.... I'm looking for some insight. Even though I'm a woman, I change my own engine and air filters and do minor things... I don't like doing anything wasteful... is this all necessary and where in south florida would I get a better price if so?? Thanks in advance for everyone's help..

Pick up a couple of bottles of Seafoam and add it to your gas tank for a few fill ups. It works very well. The transmission fluid change should show on the maintenance minder if it’s due. Seafoam works I have been using it for years and there are plenty of YouTube videos that prove it works.

Fuel system clean seems a little high. Normally it's under 200 bucks. Ask them what it consists of. If they remove the fuel pump and injectors to inspect and clean individually then it will be closer to 200.00. If they run a solution through only then closer to 100.00 The price you were quoted is more for a walnut blast to remove carbon.

For a transmission fluid change and service it is closer to 250.00 - 300.00. For a complete fluid exchange then 411.00 is about right.

I do not recommend Sea Foam. There is a lot of controversy over it. I recommend you look up the MSDS for it. Sea Foam makes it difficult to discern what is in it. Their "hydrocarbon blend" is almost 100% Ethanol. Not good at all. You are basically paying 10.00 for a bottle of rubbing alcohol.

How many miles?
How many miles do you have? And what kind of gas mileage are you getting? It’s very unlikely to be anything from the engine or transmission. Do you live in the rust belt? I have a feeling maybe one of the brake calipers could be sticking causing extra drag on the brakes. Is your car feeling harder to get moving and slowing down quickly when you lefty off the gas?

Could it be a vcm issue? Doesnt hurt to try a muzzler.

I do.

The suggested service will help improve mileage if the vehicle has no other issue respomsible for the poor mileage. However, if I was in your situation I will get a second assessment and service quote from another dealer.

Pretty sure by the way the OP is laid out it's a bot.

Random picture of female in profile, one post and saying they are a woman, both irrelevant here.

I figured as well. Spooky thing for members to be aware are the ones that have a link. NEVER EVER click on a link unless you are 100% sure it's safe.

I've noticed the last 5 weeks or so that sometimes when hitting the gas to pass on the highway, I don't have enough power... I hear engine revving and RPM shooting past 4-5.. and I know something isn't right... its not often but enough to cause worry. Then I reset gas mileage.. and a 3 hour drive on cruise used to be 25 ish miles per gallon.. when I did it recently it was around 20... so those are my two red flags and why dealer said fuel system... I only have 45,000 miles.. I have full warranty so I feel like this should not be happening at 45,000 miles... im going to some mechanics for another opinion next week... thank you everyone for your thoughts.. I just heard the 2019 have some issues so im looking into them... I really like to keep my cars a long time..

Not sure what VCM is but I looked it up and will add it to ask the mechanic... thank you..

A couple of things they should check:
1. have you been going to the same gas station? I wonder if they have bad gas.
2. check air filter see if its very dirty.
3. check air box see if there are foreign objects blocking the air hitting the filter. Especially if you park outside. Wild animals can do weird things.
The fuel tank additives won't do anything. These engines are direct injection, the gasoline never touches the intake valves. And that is the inherent problem with these engines, is that the intake valves get filthy over time. The only way to remove it is mechanical removal. At only 45k I'm skeptical that is the problem though.

As far as VCM, that only kicks in when you're at a steady cruise. 'Variable Cylinder Management' aka shuts off some of the cylinders during low engine load to increase fuel economy. It isn't activated when you're accelerating, so that wouldn't explain loss of power.

As for what exactly may be the issue, that's hard to say. We don't see a lot of driveability issues with these engines. Trying to get insight via a forum is often a fools game. A competent technician should be able to tell if it's operating normally with a test drive and a few preliminary checks.

Well said. A proper diagnostic check is in order. I decent technician will be able to find the problem quickly.

To be more specific, the rear bank of cylinders is shut down when VCM is active.

Buy a bottle of Techroline at the auto parts store. It's the additive that Chevron puts in their gas. Pour it in the next time you fill your gas tank from half empty or lower.
My wife had a Volvo S70 that was high mileage and we took it to a Volvo mechanic. He put it in and within 3 days it started running smoother. Another tank of fuel with one more container and it was purring. We started using Chevron gas after that. The fuel system cleaning price you were quoted is definitely high as another forum member stated. I would find someone else to check the transmission fluid to determine if a change is really needed. If it is because of the maintenance says it's due, change it.
